RUNDELL OF ST PINNOCK AND TYWARDREATH

A point which requires some discussion is the identity of the William Rundell who died on 19 May 1824 at Tywardreath with the William Rundell baptised at St Pinnock on 19 April 1749. His monumental inscription and burial entry both show the age of William of Tywardreath as seventy-five which, if accurate, gives a birth date between May 1748 and May 1749, fitting with the St Pinnock entry. The most likely alternative located is the baptism at Boconnoc on 22 November 1747 of William, son of Tapson and Elizabeth Rundle. However, nothing has been found to suggest the Boconnoc individual was William of Tywardreath. By contrast, there is significant evidence that the St Pinnock Rundells were connected with those who later lived at Tywardreath.

In 1782, Stephen Wilcock was apprenticed to William Rundell of Tywardreath, and in 1796, Stephen took on as an apprentice Robert Rundell, son of John Rundell of St Pinnock.[1]

The 1851 census returns for Tywardreath show Thomas Rundell, aged fifty-nine, as being born at St Pinnock.[2]

William Westcott Rundell’s notes, printed in 1891, confirm that the Rundells of Tywardreath were believed to have come from St Pinnock, stating that “Among other movements of families bearing the name of Rundell was that of the Rundells of St. Pinnock in the last century to Tywardreath, where they are now very numerous”. Some evidence is adduced to support the migration, in the form of a statement made by Robert Rundell of Tywardreath in 1888 along with corresponding entries in the St Pinnock parish registers.[3]

It may also be noted that Grace (Meager) Rundell, grandmother of the William baptised at St Pinnock in 1749, was baptised at Tywardreath in 1695, so there was a prior connection with the parish.

The will of John Rundell of St Pinnock, dated 3 December 1712 and proved the same month, gives some clues to the earlier history of the family. John leaves “fifteen pounds to Charles Rundle of saint pinock to bury me” but does not explicitly state a relationship. Charles Rundell junior and William Rundell were witnesses. The testator does not appear to be Charles’s son John because no wife is mentioned in the will and a son of John and Miriam Rundell was baptised at St Pinnock in November 1714, nearly two years after the testator’s death. The will mentions a brother Richard. John leaves £5 to the poor of Braddock as well as £5 to the poor of St Pinnock, perhaps indicating an origin in the former parish.[4] Indeed, he was buried at Braddock on 6 December 1712. John Rundells were born or baptised at Braddock in 1641 (son of John and Elizabeth) and 1659 (son of John and Grace). A Richard Rundell was baptised there in 1630, son of John.

One candidate for the father of Charles Rundell is Robert Rundell whose daughter Ann married William Worden at St Pinnock in 1683, the entry naming Robert as Ann’s father. Robert “Renedle” was buried at St Pinnock on 7 June 1697 and Ann, wife of Robert Rendle, had been buried there on 8 May 1688. A Robert Rundle was baptised at Braddock in 1620, son of John and Elizabeth.
