BULLOCK OF LANIVET
Mary
Bullock married Charles Rundell at Lanivet in 1834.
Among the records which prove her parentage are a chancery bill of complaint
from 1861 (amended in 1862) relating to property in Lanivet,
in which the daughters of Thomas Bullock who died in November 1849 are named
with their husbands.[1]
At
his death in 1849, Thomas Bullock’s age was given as eighty, fitting with the
baptism of Thomas Bullock, son of Thomas and Elizabeth, at Lanivet
in August 1769. Thomas Bullock and Elizabeth Grose had been married at Lanivet in 1764.
Richard
and Frances (Stribley) Bullock had a son called Thomas, baptised in 1717 at Lanivet and named in his parents’ wills. This Thomas would
probably have been about forty-six at the time of the marriage of Thomas
Bullock in 1764, which would be considerably older than usual for a first known
marriage. However, they appear to be the same person.
There
is some onomastic support for the identification, in that the first child of
Thomas and Elizabeth (Grose) Bullock was called Frances. Also, whilst Thomas
and Elizabeth only had one known son, Thomas, the eldest son of the younger
Thomas was called Richard.
The
will of William Bullock of Lanivet, son of Richard
and Frances, was written in 1752. William left property at Trebell,
Coombe and Tregullan in Lanivet
to his brothers Richard and Thomas.[2]
Tregullan was where Thomas Bullock, son of Thomas and
Elizabeth (Grose) Bullock, later lived. The will of Richard Bullock of Lanivet, son of Richard and Frances, was written in 1784.
It mentions the properties called Trebell and Coombe
and leaves them, after the death of Richard’s wife, to his brother Thomas
Bullock and his heirs.[3]
This indicates that Thomas, son of Richard and Frances (Stribley) Bullock, was
still living in 1784.
A
search of the burials in the Lanivet parish registers
from 1764 to 1850 showed only one Thomas Bullock who could be the son of
Richard and Frances or the husband of Elizabeth Grose, that is to say the
Thomas Bullock buried on 28 February 1800.
As
for Richard Bullock, husband of Frances Stribley, a Richard, son of John
Bullock and Elizabeth, was baptised
at Lanivet in 1676, but died young.
Another Richard, son of John and Elizabeth Bullock, was baptised
in 1678 but probably also died young as yet another Richard, son of John and
Elizabeth Bullock, was baptised
at Lanivet on 16 March 1685/86, and buried on
10 January 1686/87. This leaves the Richard Bullock baptised at Lanivet in 1675, son of Richard and Florence, as the
obvious candidate.
One
Richard Bullock was left an estate of ninety-nine years in Tregullan
in Lanivet in the will of his brother Thomas Bullock
of Bodmin in 1656.[4]
However, that Richard seems
to have been the one who married Dorothy Marten at St Mabyn in 1659 and would
therefore not be the one who married Florence Menheire.
The husband of Florence appears instead to be “Richard Bullock my nephew of Lanivet” mentioned in the 1669 will of
George Bullock of Lanivet. George was one of the sons
of Richard Bullock of Lanivet whose will was written
in 1638. The other sons named in the latter’s will are John, Edmund, Thomas and
Richard.[5]
Edmund had a son called Richard but he was not baptised
until 1647, too late to fit plausibly as the husband of Florence Menheire. Thomas left a will which does not name a son
Richard,[6]
making it unlikely that he was the father-in-law of Florence. No evidence has
been found that Richard, the son named in the 1638 will of Richard Bullock, had
any children.[7]
However, his brother John did, as the 1641 will of
Thomas Bullock of Lanhydrock, John’s uncle, mentions
“the Fower Children of John Bullock deceased”. It therefore seems most likely
that John Bullock was the father of the Richard who married Florence Menheire.
Probate
records allow some siblings of Richard Bullock, the testator of 1638, to be
traced. Their parents have not been identified but a clue is that Richard’s
will mentions “one pann which was given me by my
uncle John Willcock”. There appears to be a link with the family of Edward and
Agnes Nankevell (sometimes just Kevell)
of Braddock, with some of their family being mentioned in the will of Thomas
Bullock and the association also being apparent elsewhere.
Likely
baptisms for Thomas Bullock and Richard Bullock on 27 May 1563 and 17 March
1568/69 respectively are in the Lanhydrock parish
registers but no parents are named in the entries. A Richard Bullock was
recorded at Lanhydrock in a muster roll of 1569.[8]
There
seems to have been a connection with a John Bullock of Lanlivery,
whose son John, one of the lives on a lease of 1626, was dead by 1650.[9]
The son may have been the John Bullock of Probus whose 1644 will
mentions his brothers Thomas and Richard and sister Ann How. Thomas Bullock of Lanlivery was one of the men who took the inventory.

[7] It may be noted that the 1638 will of Richard Bullock mentions both “the Wife of John Bullock” and “the Wife of Edmond Bullock” but does not mention wives of his other sons, giving the impression that they were unmarried at that time.

[10] Transcriptions of the Lanhydrock parish registers by Reginald M. Glencross; Kresen Kernow, AP/B/1146b. The date of burial is not entirely clear as the years in the register transcription and probate record are not consistent, but 4 Feb 1644/45 seems most likely. The will of Richard Bullock mentions his brother Thomas.
[11] Transcriptions of the Lanhydrock parish registers by Reginald M. Glencross; will dated 28 Dec 1621, proved 28 Jun 1622 (National Archives, PROB 11/139/636). John’s will mentions his brothers Thomas Bullock and Richard Bullock. Glencross gives the burials of “John Bullock senior” on 31 Dec 1622 and “Constance wife of the said John Bullock” on 7 Jan immediately following. However, it seems that these are in fact the burials of John Bullock and his widow Mary and are misdated by a year. As evidence of the misdating of some entries in the registers as transcribed, see the inventory for Thomas Criffell of Lanhydrock, deceased, taken on 25 Apr 1622, compared with the indicated date of burial of 20 Feb 1622/23, and the will of Thomas Bullock, dated 3 Aug 1641 and proved 12 Feb 1641/42 (National Archives, PROB 11/188/180), compared with his purported burial date of 20 Oct 1642. The wife of John Bullock was named Mary, not Constance, but he did have a daughter with the latter name who may have been confused with his wife in the register entry. No other possible burials have been located for John and Mary, and it is known from probate records that they resided in Lanhydrock and that Mary survived John but died soon after, an inventory of her estate being taken on 1 Dec 1622 (Kresen Kernow, AP/B/603).

[13] The 1641 will of Thomas Bullock mentions “John Wendon and Thomas Wendon my Sisters sonnes” and “Walter Wendon theire brother”. The parents of these siblings have not been directly identified but it seems probable that they were Thomas Wendon of Lanivet and his wife Joan as when the latter was granted administration of her husband’s estate in 1629, one of the parties was Thomas Bullock (Kresen Kernow, AP/W/488).
[14] Will dated 23 Dec 1638, proved 20 May 1639 (National Archives, PROB 11/180/176).
[15] Agnes is named as Richard’s wife in his will. A rental of 1657 for Tremore and Rosewarrick, Lanivet, refers to a property of “George Bullook late Agnes Bullook” (Kresen Kernow, catalogue entry for CL/2/29/2).

Pounds, ed., The Parliamentary Survey of the Duchy of Cornwall, 2 vols (Torquay, 1982-84), 1:72-73, gives the impression that Thomas was deceased by 1650, but that was not the case as he was still living in 1652/53 when he was made an overseer in the will of Walter Hicks (National Archives, PROB 11/251/634).

[25] Constance is named as the mother in the baptism entry for Edmund Bullock. Constance, widow of John Bullock, renounced her right to administer John’s estate and asked for administration to be granted to her brother-in-law Richard Bullock, for the “use & benefitt of my ^ selfe & ^ Children”.

The will of Edmund Bullock of Lanivet, dated 12 Nov 1670 and proved on 20 Mar 1671/72, left almost all his estate to “Mr Charles Smyth of B[ ]”. The rest of the place name is missing due to damage to the document, but there was a Charles Smyth in Blisland.

William Minhere and Thomasine Burne were married at Lanivet on 24 Feb 1622/23.

[38] Lanivet parish registers. John Bullock is named as a grandson in the will of William Menheire in 1674 but is not mentioned in the 1714 will of Richard Bullock. The 1708/09 burial entry is for “John the Son of Richard Bullock”, which might normally be expected to refer to a child, especially in this case as John, son of Richard and Frances (Stribley) Bullock had been baptised in 1706. However, the wills of Richard and Frances (Stribley) Bullock both mention legacies to their son John. If the 1708/09 burial referred to the John baptised in 1706, then there must have been a brother of the same name, but no baptism entry for such a brother is apparent. The most likely explanation seems to be that the John Bullock buried in 1708/09 was the adult son of Richard and Florence (Menheire) Bullock and was being distinguished in the register from other John Bullocks in the area, such as the John Bullock and John Bullock junior who took the inventory of Richard Bullock in 1714/15.
[39] Lanivet parish registers. He may be the Thomas Bullock who married Honor Hawken at Bodmin on 7 May 1704 (Bodmin parish registers; Kresen Kernow, AP/B/3271). There was also a Thomas Bullock who married Joan Pascoe (see Kresen Kernow, AP/B/1868a, AP/P/2246) and had children baptised at Lanivet in the 1690s and 1700s.

These would be the sons of Richard and Frances (Stribley) Bullock.
