WILCOCK OF BRADDOCK

The Stephen Wilcock who married Elizabeth Bound at St Neot in 1725 seems to be the one baptised at Braddock in 1696 and there is good onomastic support for the identification. However, it should be noted that there were other Wilcocks in nearby parishes who used some of the same forenames.

A Stephen Wilcock married Elizabeth Hay in 1733 at St Veep. This could not be a remarriage of the Stephen who married Elizabeth Bound as Elizabeth (Bound) Wilcock was still living in 1735 when she was mentioned in the will of her aunt Martha Harris. The St Veep Stephen was probably the one whose monumental inscription at St Veep shows that he died in 1762. He was born in 1690 and was a son of Stephen and Mary Wilcock[1] so was not the Stephen Wilcock baptised at Braddock in 1696.

A Nicholas Wilcock was baptised at St Veep in 1667 and was apparently the one of that name whose monumental inscription at St Winnow states he died on 9 February 1742 aged 75.[2] He evidently married a Sarah in 1704 at St Winnow so would not be the Nicholas Wilcock whose children were baptised at Braddock in the period 1691 to 1707 and whose wife throughout that period was named Ann.

Onomastic evidence suggests the possibility that she was the Ann Walkey baptised at St Winnow on 20 Mar 1663/64, daughter of John and Philippa (Sawle) Walkey who were married at Braddock on 15 Oct 1660. However, this has not been confirmed. The will of John and Philippa’s son John Walkey is Kresen Kernow, AP/W/2039.
