LAMBERT OF ROTHWELL

The Henry Lambert who married Alice Iles in 1595 at Leeds may be the “Herry”, son of James Lambert of Holbeck, baptised at Leeds on 30 August 1573. James Lambert and Elizabeth Foster were married at Leeds on 29 July 1572.

There was also a Henry Lambert who married Margaret Sidall at Leeds on 22 July 1589. It is likely that the bride was Margaret, widow of William Sidall of Holbeck whose will was proved in 1587/88. The husband was probably the Henry Lambert who was a party with Gabriel Siddall to a fine in 1596 relating to property in Holbeck.

Alice Iles, wife of Henry Lambert, may be the daughter of that name mentioned in the 1586 will of Edward Iles of Leeds, clothier, who also appears to have resided in London for some time. There was an Alice, daughter of Ralph Iles, baptised at Leeds in 1579/80, but that would be rather late for a marriage in 1595. The two Alices were probably closely related as the 1570 will of James Iles of Leeds mentions a son Ralph and the testator’s brother Edward Iles was a witness.

There were two other Lambert/Iles marriages in the area in 1589 and 1610.

Michael Eiles and Elizabeth Lambert, widow, were married at Rothwell in 1589. Edward Iles of Leeds had a son called Michael. Elizabeth may be Elizabeth (Foster) Lambert, widow of James, as a James Lambert was buried at Rothwell on 6 July 1588.

William Lambert and Barbara Iles were married at Rothwell in 1610. William was of East Witton and his will was proved in 1654/55.[1] His wife may be the Barbara, daughter of Brian Iles, baptised at St John, Ousebridge, York, in 1588. Edward Iles of Leeds had a son called Brian.

Edward Iles of Leeds may have been the one who married Isabel Parker at Rothwell on 15 August 1553. His wife could be Isabel, widow of Thomas Parker of Rothwell whose will was written in 1552. Thomas Parker and Isabel Savile were married at Rothwell in 1549. There was a John Savile of Rothwell who was a member of the family of Savile of the Bank near Halifax and who is said to have had fifteen children. However, any connection with this Lambert family is so far speculative.
