GIBSON OF ROTHWELL

Thomas Gibson (buried 1754) of Rothwell married first, in 1699, Elizabeth Falkenor (1671-1724/25) and second, in 1725, Alice Lambert (1691-1741). Initially, it appears likely that he was the Thomas Gibson baptised in 1670 at Rothwell who was a son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Lund) Gibson. However, investigation of that family shows that after the death of her first husband, Elizabeth (Lund) Gibson married Tempest Taylor of Wakefield, and that her son Thomas was buried at Wakefield in 1673/74 as “Thomas Gibson son in law [stepson] to Tempest Taylor”. He therefore could not be the Thomas married in 1699.

The family of the Thomas baptised in 1670 was as follows:

1          WILLIAM GIBSON of Oulton was buried on 27 April 1655 at Rothwell.[1] He married ELLEN, who died in 1675.[2]

Children of William and Ellen Gibson:

i               ANN GIBSON, bap 29 May 1636, Rothwell;[3] m 14 May 1656, Rothwell, HUMPHREY MOORE.[4]

2              ii              THOMAS GIBSON (1638-1672); m ELIZABETH LUND.

iii             ROBERT GIBSON, bap 15 Aug 1641, Rothwell,[5] bur 16 Aug 1641, Rothwell.[6]

2          THOMAS GIBSON of Oulton, yeoman, was baptised on 18 October 1638 at Rothwell[7] and buried on 23 December 1672 at Rothwell.[8] He married on 22 June 1659 at Rothwell, ELIZABETH LUND,[9] daughter of Richard and Dorothy (Crowder) Lund. Elizabeth was baptised on 29 January 1642/43 at Rothwell[10] and buried on 6 November 1683 at Wakefield.[11] After the death of Thomas Gibson, she married, on 3 December 1673 at Rothwell, Tempest Taylor.[12]

Children of Thomas and Elizabeth (Lund) Gibson:

i               ANN GIBSON, bap 26 Aug 1660, Rothwell.[13]

ii              ELLEN GIBSON, b ca 1662;[14] m 18 Aug 1680, Rothwell, WILLIAM ROBERTS.[15]

iii             ELIZABETH GIBSON, bap 9 Mar 1663/64, Rothwell.[16]

iv             DOROTHY GIBSON, bap 6 Jun 1666, Rothwell.[17]

v              WILLIAM GIBSON, bap 14 Oct 1668, Rothwell,[18] bur 23 Feb 1668/69, Rothwell.[19]

                vi             THOMAS GIBSON, bap 8 Aug 1670, Rothwell,[20] bur 19 Feb 1673/74, Wakefield.[21]

The children and grandchildren of the Thomas Gibson buried in 1754 feature prominently in the 1759 will of Marmaduke Gibson of Rothwell. Thomas was therefore evidently the one baptised at Rothwell on 28 January 1674/75, a half-brother of the testator of 1759, both being sons of an earlier Marmaduke Gibson.

[2] Will dated 11 Sep 1675, proved 19 Oct 1675 (Borthwick Institute). Further evidence would be desirable for the identity of Ellen’s husband, but William Gibson seems the best candidate. The next most likely would be a Thomas Gibson but, although multiple Thomas Gibson marriages are recorded at Rothwell in the relevant period, none of the brides were named Ellen, and the Thomas son of Thomas Gibson who is the best fit chronologically (baptised 1633) appears to have died young (buried 1636). Ellen’s will names her granddaughters Ann, Ellen, Elizabeth and Dorothy Gibson but does not mention her grandson Thomas Gibson, which is consistent with him having been buried in 1673/74.

In the Rothwell parish registers (online at www.ancestry.com), the baptism entry for John gives his father’s forename as Marmaduke, but in the bishop’s transcripts, although it was written at first as Marmaduke, it has been changed to Thomas. As Marmaduke Gibson had a daughter baptised on 6 Nov 1699, he is unlikely to have had another child baptised on 1 May 1700, less than six months later.
