KITCHIN OF
COOKRIDGE AND WETHERBY
George
and Grace (Kitchin) Turner of Wetherby had a son Edward Turner who lived in Leeds.
Edward Turner was a witness at the marriage of William Crosland and Sarah
Kitchin at Leeds in 1845, Sarah being a daughter of Kelita and Sarah
(Wilkinson) Kitchin. This supports the placement of Grace (Kitchin) Turner in
this family.
There
is also corroboration from DNA matches, with Ruth Margaret (Daniels) Davies, a
descendant of George and Grace (Kitchin) Turner, having a 20 cM match with a descendant of Johnson and Elizabeth
(Hornshaw) Kitchin and a 9 cM match with a descendant
of Kelita and Sarah (Wilkinson) Kitchin.[1]
Thomas
Kitchin or Kitching of Cookridge and later of Lineham, both in the parish of Adel, died in November 1747
and was said to have been in the seventy-second year of his age, indicating a
birth around 1676.[2]
There are some Kitchin entries in the Adel parish registers in the seventeenth
century but no plausible baptism for Thomas. A search for other possible family
members reveals that a licence was issued in May 1710 for Maudlin Kitching of “Cookrick” in “Addle” (Cookridge
in Adel), aged twenty-one, to marry Robert Parkin of East Ardsley.[3]
A Magdalen, daughter of William Kitchin, was baptised at Mirfield on 11 August
1687 but she was buried there on 12 November the same year.[4]
The other obvious candidate for the Maudlin married in 1710 is Magdalen,
daughter of John Kitching of Cracoe, who was baptised
on 11 August 1689 at Rylstone. There is no further trace of her at Rylstone and
further investigation supports the proposal that her family moved to Cookridge. In particular, a Thomas, son of John Kitching of
Cracoe, baptised on 30 September 1677, is a close
match in age for Thomas of Cookridge. A Nicholas, son
of John Kitching, was baptised at Rylstone in 1685 and a Nicholas Kitchin was
buried at Adel in 1705. John, son of John Kitching of Cracoe,
was baptised in 1682/83 and a John Kitchin of the parish of Adel was married at
Guiseley in 1711 to Ann Moss, sister of Elizabeth Moss who married Thomas
Kitchin of Cookridge. Furthermore, John Kitching of Cracoe had a daughter with the more unusual name of
Abigail, baptised in 1691/92. She does not appear later in the Rylstone
registers but an Abigail Kitchen married Thomas Parker of Rothwell at St Peter,
Leeds, in 1717/18. Leeds was an adjacent parish to Adel and was where the
marriage of Maudlin Kitching and Robert Parkin took place.
When
John Kitchin had a licence to marry Ann Cookson or Cockson
in 1675, his age was given as thirty. A John, son of Roger Kitchin, was
baptised at Rylstone on 4 January 1644/45 but was buried there in 1654. A John,
son of John Kitchin of Rylstone, was baptised there on 16 April 1646 and a
John, son of John Kitchin of Cracoe, was baptised at
Rylstone on 3 December 1647.
