ROBSON ALIAS ROBSHAW OF WETHERBY

The earliest trace of this family found under the spelling Robshaw is in the baptism entry of Frances, daughter of Richard Robshaw, in 1762 at Wetherby in the parish of Spofforth. It is apparent that the family is in earlier entries in the registers of the parish under the somewhat similar name Robson. For example, Ann Robson was baptised in 1743 and Ann Robshaw of the same age married Johnson Kitchin in 1766. Hannah Robson was baptised in 1754 and Hannah Robshaw of the same age was buried in 1795. Christopher Robson was baptised in 1747/48 and Christopher Robshaw was married in the neighbouring parish of Goldsborough in 1768. In each case, no baptism for the individual in question was located under the spelling Robshaw, nor were any likely marriages or burials found for them with the spelling Robson.

The parentage of Richard Robson or Robshaw is not clear, but he may have been a son of John Robson and Frances Gibbon, both of Wetherby, who were married at Spofforth on 2 December 1705.

No marriage has been found for Richard and his wife Grace. There is a possibility that she was the Grace, daughter of Christopher Greaves, who was baptised at Spofforth on 1 February 1722/23. The reasons for considering this are: the use of the name Christopher for a son of Richard Robshaw; the family of William Greaves being enumerated adjacently to that of Richard Robshaw in 1776;[1] and a witness to the marriage of William and Mary (Robshaw) Daker in 1777 being Hannah Barker, a Hannah Greaves having married William Barker at Spofforth in 1773. On the other hand, the ages given for Grace, wife of Richard Robshaw, in the 1776 population listing and at her burial suggest that she was born about five years earlier than the baptism of Grace Greaves.

It may be noted that there is a gap in the traced children of Richard Robshaw between Hannah (baptised in 1754) and Joseph (baptised in 1760), so there may have been children additional to the ones shown below.

[16] No baptism has been found for Mary, but there does not seem to be any other family in which she could plausibly fit. There is indeed some support for her placement here as in 1776, William Daker (who married Mary Robshaw the next year) was living with the family of Johnson and Ann (Robshaw) Kitchin: see Brian Jones, ed., Population Listing for the Township of Wetherby in the West Riding of Yorkshire, 1776 (Bradford, 1996), 7. The baptism at Wetherby in October 1778 of Joseph, illegitimate son of Mary Robshaw, gives the impression that there may have been another Mary Robshaw in the area. However, this Joseph appears to be the one recorded as living with William Daker in the 1841 census returns for Wetherby (National Archives, HO 107/1289/8, fol. 19) when Joseph’s age was given as 65 (that is, 65 to 69), and he was buried at Wetherby in Nov 1842 when he was said to be 68. Therefore it seems he may have been born before the marriage of William and Mary (Robshaw) Daker but not baptised until afterwards.
