MOSS OF COOKRIDGE AND HORSFORTH

No baptism has been found for Matthew Moss (buried 1704) who married Rosamund Harrison at Adel in 1682/83 but it seems that he was a son of Thomas and Ann Moss of Cookridge in that parish. The will of Matthew Craven “of Shibdenhall in Northowram in the County of Yorke Felmonger” mentions “Anne my daughter wife of Thomas Moss” and leaves “unto Matthew Moss my Grandchild five shillings; To Thomas Moss his brother one shilling; And unto Grace Moss theire sister two shillings”.[1] It is known that a Thomas Moss was living at Cookridge in 1662 and was married to an Ann.[2] Prior to living at Northowram, Matthew Craven had lived at Shipley in the parish of Bradford and earlier still is recorded in the parish of Guiseley, adjacent to Adel. Furthermore, the Matthew Moss buried in 1704 and his son Thomas Moss followed the closely related occupations of skinner and fellmonger which also provides some support for a link with the fellmonger Matthew Craven.
