GILL OF DRONFIELD

More than one William Gill had children baptised at Dronfield in the 1660s to 1680s. This is apparent from the sequence of dates, for example Anthony, son of William Gill, being baptised on 7 February 1666/67, followed a few weeks later by Elizabeth, daughter of William Gill, on 10 March 1666/67. In most cases the father is identified in the parish register by his residence, one William being of Unstone and the other of Woodsmithies.[1] The latter location seems to have been a single property and was very close to Unstone. William of Woodsmithies left a will written in 1713 and proved in 1722, which aids significantly in identifying his children.

[1] There appears to be a mistake in the register in the case of Eleanor Gill, baptised on 9 Sep 1688, where the residence is given as Woodsmithies. It is given as Unston in the bishop’s transcripts, which seems more likely considering that Joseph, son of William Gill of Woodsmithies, had been baptised on 10 Jun 1688.

It was unusual but not unknown at the time for two surviving siblings or half-siblings to have the same forename. In this case, it is supported by the will of William Gill. Although it does not name his daughters, it mentions both “My Son in Law John Lee” and “My Son in Law John Bate”. The age of Elizabeth who married John Lee is given as 23 or thereabouts in the marriage allegation of 1686/87, which fits slightly better with her being the Elizabeth baptised in 1661/62 rather than the one baptised in 1666/67. John Lee is also the first to be named when the sons-in-law are listed in the will of William Gill.

[37] The Dronfield parish registers show a William, son of William Gill, baptised on 3 Mar 1671/72, and a William, son of William Gill junior, baptised on 28 Jan 1672/73. Either William Gill having children in the period could conceivably be described as junior (one because he was younger and the other because he was a son of another William Gill). A William Gill of Dronfield married Mary Babbin or Bavin at Chesterfield on 24 Apr 1697, when his age was given as 23: Chesterfield parish registers; Dioceses of Lichfield & Coventry Marriage Allegations and Bonds, 1636-1893 (online at www.findmypast.co.uk). Charles Gill of Chesterfield, one of the parties on the marriage allegation, was evidently a son of George Gill of Brimington (1637-1716) and may be the Charles Gill who witnessed the will of William Gill of Woodsmithies in 1713. Mary was a sister of Elizabeth Bavin who married Joseph Rodger, brother of Alice (Rodger) Gill. See the will of Anthony Baven, proved in 1703 (Dioceses of Lichfield and Coventry Wills and Probate 1521-1860, online at www.findmypast.co.uk).
