DRABLES OF DRONFIELD

Barnaby Bagley and Elizabeth Drable were married on 1 February 1629/30 at Dronfield. The will of Barnaby, written on 7 March 1632/33 and proved on 24 September 1634, mentions his wife Elizabeth and “Georg Drables my Father in lawe”.[1]

Elizabeth, wife of George Drables, was buried at Dronfield in 1631/32. No marriage for George and Elizabeth has been found in the Dronfield area and no baptism for George’s daughter Elizabeth has been found nearby, although some other daughters were baptised at Dronfield in the period from 1609 to 1615.

One possibility is that George and Elizabeth were the “Gorge Drable & Elzabeth Adams” who were married on 8 November 1602 at Hamsey in Sussex. This is very far (around 175 miles) from Dronfield. However, the lack of other Drable records at Hamsey suggest that the family moved away from the area. The only other apparently relevant entry in the Hamsey registers is the baptism of “Elzabeth Dravill” on 4 September 1603. Parents are not named in the baptisms listed at this point but the entry would fit with the marriage of Elizabeth, daughter of George Drable, to Barnaby Bagley in 1629/30. Whilst the identity is possible, there is no obvious reason why George would have been married at Hamsey, so further evidence would be desirable.[2]

[2] A George Drable of Wymington, Bedfordshire, made his will in 1620 naming his wife Elizabeth (National Archives, PROB 11/137/115). The testator’s children named in the will were Agnes, Mary and Elizabeth, and the Wymington parish registers include the baptisms of Mary and Elizabeth in 1617 and 1620 respectively (Bedfordshire Baptisms, online at www.findmypast.co.uk), so it seems likely that the testator’s marriage was later than the one in 1602 at Hamsey.

[4] Dronfield parish registers. Edward may have been married previously as Agnes, wife of Edward Drables, was buried at Dronfield on 30 Sep 1561. An Edward Calton and Elizabeth Drables were married at Dronfield in 1570. Dorothy (Calton) Drables may be the Dorothy Drables who married Edward Moore at Dronfield on 19 Nov 1595 but it is unclear when Edward Drables died.

[7] Dronfield parish registers. He may be the Edward Drables who married Helen Parker on 22 Oct 1592 at Dronfield although it is possible that was a remarriage of his father. Edward Drable the elder and Edward Drable the younger are both mentioned in a legal case of 1585-86 (National Archives, catalogue entries for STAC 5/G1/22 and STAC 5/G28/16).

[17] Dronfield parish registers. A George Drable was buried at Dronfield on 26 Mar 1657. However, the 1626/27 will of Rosamund Janson of Dronfield mentions “George Drables [the] younger” so there was more than one person of that name in the area at that time (Dioceses of Lichfield and Coventry Wills and Probate 1521-1860, online at www.findmypast.co.uk).

[25] Dronfield parish registers. She was probably the Ann Drable who married William Dawson on 13 Apr 1640 at Dronfield.
