RODGER OF STAVELEY

The paternity of Alice Rodger, wife of William Gill, is confirmed by the 1671 will of her father William, which names his daughter “Ales Gyll” and grandchild George Gyll.[1] The will also names the testator’s wife Elizabeth. He was apparently the William Rodger who married Elizabeth Frith at Staveley in 1636 as the testator’s signature on William’s will matches that of a witness to the 1664 will of Peter Firth or Frith which mentions his “brothers in Law William Roger & John Alcrofte”.[2]

The signature of William Rodger can be seen on the 1668/69 inventory of the estate of Mary Newbold of Mosborough in Eckington.[3] This supports his identification as the William Rodger named as a son in the 1632 will of Arthur Rodger of Handley, which also names “Mary Newbould my eldest daughter”.[4]

The was also a William Rodger who married Elizabeth Browne at Staveley on 9 June 1661, and Elizabeth wife of William Rogers was buried there on 6 February 1664/65.

Some other Staveley wills are relevant to the family covered here, including those of Richard Rodger alias Webster (proved in 1616), John Rodger (proved in 1636) and Robert Rodger (proved in 1662).

[16] Alice had children baptised as late as 1688 so she would have been born after the marriage of William Rodger and Elizabeth Frith in 1636. It is possible, but not as clear, that William’s children John and Elizabeth were also children of Elizabeth Frith.
