GILBERT OR GILBERD OF NORTH PETHERWIN

The spelling of the surname of this family varies but generally Gilbert is common until the mid-eighteenth century and Gilberd is often used after that period. Some descendants in the nineteenth century and later used the spelling Gillbard.

Earlier Gilberts of North Petherwin are recorded in the heraldic visitation of 1620[1] but no link with the family covered here has been found as yet.

1 JOHN GILBERT married on 18 May 1682 at North Petherwin, Devon, HONOR SHORT.[2] Honor was buried on 10 July 1714 at North Petherwin.[3]

2 WILLIAM GILBERT of North Petherwin, husbandman, was baptised on 17 July 1693 at North Petherwin[16] and buried on 3 February 1761 at North Petherwin.[17] He married on 6 April 1724 at Luffincott, AMY FURSE,[18] daughter of John and Frances (Sleaman) Furse. Amy was born on 22 November 1700, baptised on 11 Dec 1700 at Kelly[19] and buried on 29 November 1777 at North Petherwin.[20]

3 DIGORY GILBERD was baptised on 17 May 1730 at North Petherwin[30] and buried on 18 April 1803 at North Petherwin.[31] He married first, on 2 Jul 1750 at North Petherwin, ANN WELLS.[32] Ann was buried on 4 Oct 1750 at North Petherwin.[33] Digory married second, on 25 May 1755 at North Petherwin, MARGERY SHEER,[34] daughter of John and Margery (Colwill) Sheer (see here).
