SHORT OF STRATTON AND ST GENNYS
Honor Short married John Gilbert in 1682 at North Petherwin. There are some probate records for Shorts of North Petherwin in the relevant period but they do not mention Honor or any Gilberts.[1] Honor appears instead to have been a daughter of Roger Short of St Gennys. John and Honor had a son named Henry Gilbert. A Henry Short married a Joan at North Petherwin in 1690[2] and they were apparently the Henry and Joan Short who had a daughter baptised at St Gennys in 1696.[3] Henry Short of St Gennys was a party in an administration record of 1694 along with Roger Short of St Gennys when the latter was granted administration of the estate of his sister Mary Short of Stratton.[4] It is known that Roger Short had a daughter called Honor because she is mentioned in the 1666/67 will of her grandmother Arminell Short of Stratton, widow. The will mentions “my daughter Mary Short” and “my sone Roger Short” and leaves “unto Honor the daughter of Roger Short aforesaid twenty shillings... and... unto the rest of his Chilldren twelvepence a peece”.[5]
The father of Roger Short has not been definitely identified but the 1660 will of John Short of Stratton mentions, among others, “Roger Shorte the sonne of Armynell Shorte”, “Marie Shorte the daughter of Armynell Short” and “Margerie Pyne my sister”.[6] A likely candidate for Roger’s father is Richard Short who is mentioned as a son in the 1635 will of Edmond Short of Stratton, along with the testator’s son John Short and daughter Margery.[7] The will of an earlier John Short of Stratton, written in 1603, mentions his son Edmond.[8]

[7] Kresen Kernow, AP/S/729. Edmond Short’s wife Mary was mentioned as a daughter in the 1633 will of Alice Arnoll alias Mill of Stratton (Kresen Kernow, AP/A/194). Alice had apparently been married more than once, her last husband being William Mill (Kresen Kernow, AP/M/558). The 1613/14 will of John Robinson of Stratton also mentions the children of Edmond Short (Kresen Kernow, AP/R/224).

[12] Honor is named as a daughter of Roger Short in the 1666/67 will of Arminell Short (Kresen Kernow, AP/S/1307), which also mentions but does not name “the rest of his Chilldren”. Henry has not been directly confirmed to be a son of Roger but is placed here because he was a party with Roger in the administration record for Mary Short in 1694 (Kresen Kernow, AP/S/1930). Another possible child of Roger is the Elizabeth Short who married Nicholas Uglow at St Gennys in 1695: Cornwall OPC Database (www.cornwall-opc-database.org).
