SHEER OF NORTH PETHERWIN

The will of Degory Sheer of Treneglos, dated 1704, mentions his “Cozen” Richard Sheer of North Petherwin, mason, as well as Richard’s son Degory.[1] The testator was evidently a son of Nicholas Sheer of Treneglos, husbandman, being granted administration of the latter’s estate in 1684.[2] It is possible that this Nicholas was also the father of the Nicholas Sheer who married Phillip Seccomb at North Petherwin in 1657.

A Phillip, daughter of Digory Seccombe, and her children, are mentioned in the will of John Seccombe of Jacobstow in 1660 (Kresen Kernow, AP/S/1121). However, that Phillip was evidently the daughter mentioned in the 1653 will of Phillip Seccombe of Lanteglos by Camelford, widow of Digory Seccombe (National Archives, PROB 11/237/291), and more likely she was the Phillip Seccombe who married Christopher Allee at Michaelstow in 1654 rather than the one married at North Petherwin in 1657. There were other Seccombes in North Petherwin in the seventeenth century, but no relationship with Phillip (Seccomb) Sheer has been found so far.
