RHODES OF HOLBECK

The parentage of Mary Rhodes, wife of Benjamin Williamson, is confirmed by the wills of Thomas Rhodes, written in 1797, and Sarah Rhodes, written in 1830. Thomas names his wife Sarah and children Ann, Mary, Thomas, John, George and James. Sarah names her eldest son Thomas, daughter Mary the wife of Benjamin Williamson, son John, son George, late daughter Ann Leathley, and son James.

In July 1774, the age of Thomas Rhodes was given as twenty-four.[1] One of the witnesses at his marriage to Sarah Gibson was a Mary Rhodes. The witnesses of Thomas’s will also give a clue to his parentage. One witness was George Rhodes, and another was John Ward. A John Ward had married a Mary Rhodes at Leeds in 1775, one of the witnesses on that occasion being Joseph Rhodes.

It appears that Thomas Rhodes was the one of that name baptised at Mill Hill Chapel in Leeds on 24 December 1749, son of John and Mary Rhodes of Holbeck.

It is possible that there were children of John and Mary (Ellis) Rhodes in addition to the ones mentioned below, as well as perhaps other children of Thomas and Sarah (Gibson) Rhodes who may have died young. However, the presence in the area of more than one John Rhodes and more than one Thomas Rhodes at the relevant times make it more difficult to determine the particular parentage in some cases.

An earlier entry in the Mill Hill Chapel registers which may be relevant to the origin of John Rhodes is the baptism in 1731/32 of Mary, daughter of George Rhodes and Hannah.
