VEAL OF ST GILES ON THE HEATH

The 1851 census returns for “Veals Shop” in St Giles on the Heath show John Veal, aged fifty-two, born at St Giles on the Heath, with (among others) his nephew Henery Pearse, eighteen, born at Northcott Hamlet. Also enumerated in that year at “Veals Shop” was Elizabeth Veal, aged eighty-two, born at Lifton.[1]

The certificate for the death of Elizabeth Veale in 1853 records her as the widow of John Veale, an agricultural labourer.

These records confirm that Mary Veal who married Henry Pearce in 1817 was the Mary, daughter of John and Elizabeth Veal, who was baptised at St Giles on the Heath on 3 July 1791.

The John Veal who was buried at St Giles on the Heath in 1829 aged 68 and who married Elizabeth Browne there in 1790 was evidently the John baptised at Clawton on 1 February 1761, son of John and Charity Veale. John Veale and Charity Hill were married at Clawton in 1754 and one of the witnesses at the marriage of John Veale and Elizabeth Browne was a Thomas Hill. The marriage of Grace Veale and William Holland at St Giles on the Heath in 1782 was witnessed by Jacob Hill and Thomas Veale. This fits with the baptism at Clawton in 1756 of Grace, daughter of John and Charity (Hill) Veal, and supports the identity of the Clawton Veals with those of St Giles on the Heath.

The names of the parents of infants are generally given in the burial entries in the Clawton parish registers in this period, which is not the case in this entry, so it appears to refer to an adult and not to the John Veal baptised earlier in the same year. It may also be observed that there are no more recorded children of John and Charity Veal after this point.
