[13] Death certificate. The certificate describes Mary as the widow of Joseph Sewell, a journeyman pilot, but the age of 71 matches perfectly with that of the widow of James Sewell and no other Mary Sewell to whom the certificate would be likely to relate has been found. Some confusion or lack of knowledge about Mary’s husband who had died many years previously would not be surprising. The informant was Sarah Dickman of 7 Douro Street, where the death occurred. Sarah seems to have been the wife of Joseph Dickman, with Joseph’s mother being Jane Sawyers, sister of Mary (Sawyers) Sewell. There was also another connection between the Dickman and Sewell families as Alice, daughter of Joseph Sewell, mariner (son of James and Mary) married John Dickman in 1858.
