BURROWES OF WHISTON

The Doncaster parish registers record the burial of “Sara the wife of Thomas Cooke bucher” in 1679. The name of Sarah’s father is given by the 1660 will of Margaret Burrowes of Rotherham. The testator mentions “John Burrowes sonne of my Late husband John Burrowes deceased” and “Elizabeth the wife of Gyles Kiddington Sarah the wife of Thomas Cooke of Doncaster Butcher Anne the wife of William Heward of Sprottbrough and Ellin the wife of William Birchenell of Mansfeild in the County of Nottingham daughters of my Late husband John Burrowes aforesaid”.

A John Burrowes married Ann Revell on 12 July 1615 at Rotherham. However, this seems to be a different John from the one who married Margaret, the testator of 1660. The children assigned to Ann (Revell) Burrowes are Robert, Richard, John, Margaret and Sarah.[1] This does not fit well with the names John, Elizabeth, Sarah, Ann and Ellen given for the children of the John married to Margaret.

The John Burrowes who married Margaret appears to have lived at Guilthwaite in the parish of Whiston, adjacent to Rotherham. John Burrows of Whiston married Ellen Thornton at Bradford in 1615. The first two recorded daughters for John Burrowes in the Whiston parish registers after this date are Elizabeth and Sarah (a second daughter with the latter name being baptised after the death of the first in infancy). This matches the first two daughters of John mentioned in the will of Margaret. Unfortunately, the Whiston parish registers have a large gap from around 1621 to 1653 and many of these years also lack bishop’s transcripts, so information on the family in this period is limited.

A pedigree in Joseph Hunter’s Familiae Minorum Gentium also shows Ellen Thornton as the mother of the children of John Burrowes mentioned in Margaret’s will.[2]

[3] Abstracts of the will of Richard Burrowes are given by Russell Smith and on rotherhamweb.co.uk. Richard’s will was dated 20 Feb 1616 and describes him as weak and diseased but it was not proved until 10 Jan 1627. The testator mentions his natural son John Burrowes and the latter’s wife “Hellen”. Natural in this instance seems to be referring to Richard’s own (biological) son as distinct from his sons-in-law who are also mentioned in the will, and does not indicate illegitimacy. The will also mentions Richard’s sister Alice. Index entries suggest that British Library, additional charter 18,013, records a 1627 inquisition post mortem for Richard Burrowes of Guilthwaite.
