THORNTON OF TYERSAL

I have not researched the earlier generations of the Thorntons in detail. Accounts of the family are given in:

Ralph Thoresby, Ducatus Leodiensis (London, 1715), 22-23

J.W. Clay, ed., Dugdale’s Visitation of Yorkshire, with Additions, 3 vols (Exeter, 1899-1917), 1:133-36

Wilfrid Robertshaw, “The Hamlet or Manor of Tyersall”, The Bradford Antiquary, 9(1940-52):161-89

Some of the ancestry of Beatrice (Tempest) Thornton is traced in the work of Eleanor Blanche Tempest.

Elizabeth (Hobson) Thornton’s father John Hobson was of Dodworth[1] in the parish of Silkstone. A John Hobson of Dodworth in the relevant period is stated to have married Anne Swyfte. If Anne was Elizabeth’s mother, and the other relevant connections in a pedigree in William Monck Mason’s History of the Church of St. Patrick[2] are correct, then Elizabeth may descend from King Edward III.[3] However, I have not yet closely investigated her forebears.
