MARTIN OF EGLOSKERRY AND ST STEPHEN BY LAUNCESTON
Susan Martin, or Susanna as she was often called,
wife of John Pearce of Warbstow, died in January
1838, when her age was given as seventy-four. This indicates a birth around
1763 although she had a child baptised as late as
1810, suggesting that she may have been slightly younger.
The name of her son Tristram was suggestive of a
connection with Tristram Martin of North Tamerton who
married
Susanna Youldon in 1765 at Werrington but there does not seem to be any
indication that Tristram had a daughter called Susan.[1]
One Susanna, daughter of Edward and Mary Martyn,
was baptised at Boyton on 22 May
1765. However, the burial
there of a Susanna Martyn in 1774 makes it doubtful that she survived to
adulthood.
The correct baptism for the wife of John Pearce
seems to be that of Susanna, daughter of Robert and Rebecca Martin, at
Werrington on 15 June 1766. Robert Martyn and Rebecca Edwards had been married
at Lawhitton in 1749. John Pearce died in 1851 at Downhays in Werrington,[2]
where his daughter Jane (Pearce) Jones was residing.[3]
Downhays was the abode of William Martin[4]
and, earlier,
of his father John Martin, who was another child of Robert and Rebecca
(Edwards) Martin. There was a clear connection between Jane (Pearce) Jones and
William Martin as Jane is recorded as a visitor at his home in 1861[5]
and he was present when Jane died in 1865 and was the informant when her death
was registered.[6]
Robert Martin of Lawhitton and Werrington appears to be the one of that name baptised at St Giles on the Heath in 1717, son of William and Mary (May) Martin who had previously lived at St Stephen by Launceston. The family of William and Mary had connections with Lawhitton, their son Digory and Mary’s sister Charity both residing there. The name of Robert’s son William Maynard Martin is also of significance as the mother of Mary (May) Martin was a Maynard and Mary had sisters married to William Maynard and Walter Maynard.[7]
It can also be seen that in 1769, Robert Martin was joined in the bond for the marriage of his daughter Blanche by a William Martin of Plymouth, malt maker. William and Mary (May) Martin had a son called William who in 1739 was living at St Stephen by Launceston and was a cooper, an occupation which, like malt maker, was related to brewing.
A search for the origins of William Martin, husband of Mary May, produced two plausible candidates in the Martin family of St Stephen by Launceston and neighbouring Egloskerry. One William Martin was baptised at Egloskerry on 19 March 1664/65 (also recorded at St Stephen), son of Degory and Joan. This, however, is rather early to be the William Martin who married in 1706. The other candidate is William, son of Thomas Martin. No baptism has been found for this William, but he had siblings baptised between 1678 and 1687 which fits well with the 1706 marriage. The will of John Martin of St Stephen, written in 1705, helps to establish that the fathers of both candidates were brothers of the testator. John’s will mentions several, if not all, of his nephews and nieces. Thomas Martin, explicitly described in the will as the son of John’s brother Thomas, is described later in the document as “my Kinsman”. John makes “my Kinsman William Martyn” the residuary legatee and executor. As he only names one William Martin and does not specify his parentage, it seems likely that he only had one nephew of that name living at the time. William, son of Thomas, is known to have been living in 1702/03 when he was mentioned in his father’s will, so he seems to be the man. No confirmed record of William, son of Degory, has been found other than his baptism.

Glencross gives a John Marten buried on 23 Apr 1705 or 1706 and the bishop’s transcripts give one buried on 1 Jan 1705/06 which is not given by Glencross. However, John’s will is dated 3 Nov 1705 and the inventory after death is dated 3 Dec 1705.
