MAYNARD OF WERRINGTON

The 1659 will of John Maynard of Milton Abbot mentions various relatives including “everie Child of Walter Maynard of Kelly my kinsman”. This appears to be Walter Maynard, son of the Thomas Maynard who died in 1648 and therefore may help to shed light on Thomas’s origins. Among the others mentioned by John are “Richard Maynard of Probus my kinsman”, which may be the son of that name of Thomas and brother of Walter.[1] John also mentions his kinsman Tristram Maynard of North Tamerton and “Phillipp Maynard my Unckle”. Further support for a connection is that Thomas’s 1648 will mentions a yearling which is “nowe att Bate p[ar]ke in Milton” and John Maynard’s will states that “I am possessed of Two Closes of Land Called Bate Parkes”.[2]

These Maynards may have been related to those recorded in the heraldic visitation of Cornwall in 1620.[3] Further probate records which may be relevant include the wills of Thomas Maynard of Saltash (1590/91),[4] Oliver Maynard of Milton Abbot (1602/03)[5] and Thomas Maynard of Kelly (1640).

[7] The 1648 will of Thomas Maynard refers to property “att Cleeve in the custodye of Walter Maynard my sonne”. Cleave was in the parish of Kelly. [14] He may be the Thomas Maynard who married Charity May, sister of William May, on 2 Feb 1668/69 at Kelly. However, Walter Maynard of Kelly is also known to have had a son called Thomas.

[15] Thomasine Maynard is mentioned in the will of Thomasine Dark, written in 1643 (Kresen Kernow, AP/D/464), but had a daughter baptised as late as 1684, so would not have been born much before 1640.
