HAWKINS OF GRAMPOUND

The will of John Kittow of Polkerris in Tywardreath mentions his wife Jane. One of the witnesses was Bennett Pardew and one of the men who took the inventory of John’s estate was Henry Hawkins of the parish of Creed. The 1640 will of John Hawkins of Grampound in the parish of Creed mentions his brother Henry Hawkins, sister Jane Kittow, “John Kittows Children”, and Bennett Pardew. Administration of the estate of John Hawkins the elder of Grampound, also dated 1640, was granted to his son Henry Hawkins.

The will of Katherine Hawkins, a sister of Jane, also elucidates the family connections.

[1] Kresen Kernow, AP/H/1034. It appears from the inventory of John’s estate that he had a brother also called John Hawkins. The latter may have been the John Hawkins of Grampound whose will was proved in 1643 (Kresen Kernow, AP/H/1118).

[2] The inventory of the estate of John Hawkins mentions his wife Paschas. She is said to have been a daughter of Joseph Cooke of Mevagissey.

[3] National Archives, PROB 11/177/33. His descendant Thomas Hawkins was a member of parliament for Grampound from 1747 to 1754 and father of Christopher Hawkins who was created a baronet in 1791: William Betham, The Baronetage of England, 5 vols (London, 1801-05), 4:225-27; G.E. Cokayne, Complete Baronetage, 5 vols (Exeter, 1900-06), 5:271.

[4] The will of Thomas Hawkins mentions his wife Awdry. She is stated to have been Audrey Crudge: Davies Gilbert, The Parochial History of Cornwall, 4 vols (London, 1838), 1:357 (page misnumbered 557); George Clement Boase, Collectanea Cornubiensia (Truro, 1890), cols 341-42. This seems probably correct as the will of Thomas Hawkins appoints John Coke, esquire, and Thomas Crudge, clerk, as overseers. Audrey Crudge was a daughter of another Thomas Crudge who was a “Cosen” of John Coke of Trerice (Kresen Kernow, AP/C/519). National Achives, C 10/166/47, which I have not seen, may be relevant here.

[7] Kresen Kernow, AP/H/1035, AP/H/1119. They may have been the John and Elizabeth Kent who had a daughter called Pascus baptised at St Mary, Truro, in 1642.
