DOLLING OF STAVERTON

Joan (Dolling) Emmett being the daughter of Nicholas and Petronel (Brodridge) Dolling baptised in November 1627 would mean she was probably only fifteen when she married George Emmett in June 1643. However, there is onomastic support for the identification as George and Joan’s children included both a Nicholas and a Petronel. The baptisms of George and Joan’s children beginning around five years after their marriage is consistent with Joan being young at that time and the continuation of the baptisms until 1672 makes it unlikely that Joan was born much earlier than 1627. Nothing has been found to suggest that George Emmett was married more than once. Most of his children’s baptisms do not name the mother but she is named as Joan at the baptism of Peter in 1663.

It may be relevant here that the 1658/59 will of Richard Brodridge of Staverton names George Emmett as an overseer.[1]

There is also an entry there for the burial of “Joan the daughter of George Emett” on 28 Jan 1699/1700 who may be a child who has not otherwise been traced, but there is a possibility that “daughter” is an error for “widow”.
