COSTENTINE OF KETTLEWELL

The Rylstone parish registers include a summary of the family of Thomas Cockson, including his baptism and burial dates and a list of his children. Thomas is there stated to have “Marryed with Agnes Costentyne”.[1] Thomas’s will confirms that his wife was called Agnes[2] and the 1609 will of Robert Costentyne of Kettlewell mentions “Agnes Cockson my daught[e]r”.[3]

The 1578/79 will of Margaret Richardson, widow (requesting burial at Kettlewell) leaves “to Heline Roberte Constyntyne wyfe & to M[ar]garet her doughter a Cowe and to Thomas Constinetyne ther sone a Cowe” as well as “to Richarde Roberte & M[ar]garet Constyntyne Henry Constintyne children to everie of them a sheepe” and “unto Henry Constyntyne and to Eline Roberte Constyntyne wyfe a feder bed betwene them & to agree thone of them w[i]th the other for ther p[ar]t[es]”. The testator makes “Roberte Constynetyne” her executor and residuary legatee. It appears that the Robert married to Ellen is the one being made executor and that he was a different person from the Robert who was son of Henry, although the will is not explicit. The impression given is that the testator Margaret Richardson may be the mother of Ellen, Robert’s wife, but the relationship is not actually stated. The will also suggests that Margaret’s maiden surname was Blackborn as she includes legacies to “Henry Richarde Jane & Jennet Blackborne my brother Will[ia]m children”.[4]

The Henry Costentine mentioned in Margaret’s will was probably the one of that name, residing at Conistone, who made his own will in 1608, mentioning sons Richard and Robert. An Edmund Richardson is also mentioned and the will was witnessed by Robert Costentine the elder.[5]

[8] The will of Margaret Richardson, dated 7 Jan 1578[/79] and proved 20 Jan 1578/79 (Borthwick Institute) mentions Margaret, daughter of Ellen, wife of Robert Costentine. The will of Robert Costentine includes legacies to Margaret, wife of Henry Atkinson, and to Henry’s children, so it seems likely that this was the same Margaret. The wording of Margaret Richardson’s will allows for the possibility that the legatee Margaret was a daughter of Ellen but not a daughter of Robert.

The nuncupative will of William Riplay alias Clarke of Coniston, made ca 18 Jan 1627/28 and proved on 19 Apr 1632 (Borthwick Institute) supports the identification of the Richard Costentine who married Margaret Wigglesworth as Richard Costentine of Kettlewell.
