CHELY OF TYWARDREATH

Thomas Courtenay married Jane Chely at Tywardreath in 1696. She was apparently “Jane the daughter of Robert Chellye” who was baptised there in 1665/66 but further details of her ancestry are not immediately apparent as there were two men named Robert Chely married in the area around the same time. Robert Chely of Fowey, husbandman, married Joan Davy on 11 September 1654, with the marriage being recorded in both the Fowey and St Winnow parish registers.[1] Robert Chely and Paskus Kittow were married on 11 June 1655 at Golant.[2]

Two children of Robert Chely were baptised at Golant: Elizabeth on 25 September 1655[3] and Robert on 19 October 1657.[4] However, the mother’s name is given as Joan, so these were evidently not children of Robert and Pascus who were married at Golant, but rather children of Robert Chely and Joan Davy.

Five baptisms of children of Robert Chely are recorded in the Tywardreath parish registers in the period 1656 to 1669. None of the entries give the mother’s name but the earliest one is for a daughter named Pascus, which supports the identification of her mother as Pascus Kittow. The other four Tywardreath entries are presumed here to also be for children of Robert and Pascus but the evidence is not ideal as Tywardreath was a neighbouring parish of Golant, where Robert and Joan’s known children were baptised.

Robert Chely who married Joan Davy may have been closely related to Julian Chely who married John Davy at Fowey on 24 February 1654/55. Julian later married John Coule at Golant in 1695 and was named as a kinswoman in the 1705 will of William Chely of Fowey. Julian was probably a daughter of Nicholas Chely who was a son of Robert Chely of Fowey who made his will in 1643.

One Robert Chely was baptised at Golant on 18 Apr 1631, son of Thomas and Pentecost. Thomas was probably the son of that name mentioned in the 1643 will of Robert Chely. The testator also had a son called Robert Chely as well as a grandson Robert whose father was Nicholas Chely. It seems most likely that the Robert who married Pascus Kittow was a son of Thomas Chely and that the Robert who married Joan Davy was a son of Nicholas Chely, although it is uncertain.
