CALBECK OF HUNSLET
Administration for the estate of James Fowler of Hunslet was granted on 16 February 1676/77 to his widow Susanna. I have not yet found a marriage for James and Susanna, but the latter was apparently the Suzan, daughter of Thomas Calbecke of Hunslet, who was baptised at St Peter, Leeds, on 19 August 1623. The witnesses to Susanna’s will in 1679 were John Overend, Joshua Calbecke and John Hutchinson. Joshua, son of Thomas Calbecke of Hunslet, was baptised at Leeds in 1634. Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Calbecke of Hunslet, was baptised at Leeds in 1625, and John Hutchinson and Elizabeth Calbecke of Hunslet were married at Leeds in 1658.
Further support for a family connection is found in the 1659 will of Elizabeth Lambert of Hunslet, widow. Elizabeth had previously been a Calbeck and her daughter Mary Lambert was the second wife of Thomas Calbeck and mother of Joshua. Elizabeth left “unto Joshuah Colebeck one shillinge, and unto Sarah his Sister one shillinge” and also left “unto little James Fouler one shillinge and unto his Sister one shillinge”.[1]
The 1667 will of John Calbeck of Warley shows that he was a brother of Thomas Calbeck as well as a Robert and a William. John mentions the children of his “late brother Thomas”, being Robert Calbeck, Joshua Calbeck, Susan, Elizabeth, Sarah and Ann. Unfortunately, the women’s surnames are not given. However, the testator does mention that one of his properties in Hunslet was occupied by James Fowler.
The parentage of the four brothers is uncertain but the most likely father for them seems to be Robert Calbeck of Leeds. There was also a William Calbeck of Hunslet who is another candidate.

[15] The St Peter, Leeds, parish registers (online at www.ancestry.com) show the burial of a Susanna Fowler in Nov 1679. It may relate to a burial at one of the chapels in the parish as it appears to have been added later than the main sequence of entries. It is placed between burials of 21 Nov and 22 Nov. However, the will of Susanna Fowler is dated 13 Dec 1679 and proved 21 Jan 1679/80 (Borthwick Institute).
