WALTON OF HIGH
HOYLAND
Thomas
Walton of High Hoyland married Sarah Heppenstall in 1759 and Mary Exley in
1772. His age at the time of his second marriage is given as thirty in
abstracts of marriage licence records but that may be intended to mean at least
thirty rather than be an exact age. Thomas seems to have come from the neighbouring
parish of Cawthorne, where a Thomas, son of Thomas Walton, was baptised on 13
May 1727. There was also a Thomas, son of John and Hannah Walton, baptised at
Cawthorne on 18 July 1743. The latter was probably the Thomas Walton of
Cawthorne who married Sarah Hindle at Barnsley on 13 January 1780 when he was
said to be aged thirty-six.
Sarah
Heppenstall who married Thomas Walton at High Hoyland in 1759 was perhaps the
Sarah, daughter of Peter Heppenstall of High Hoyland, who was baptised there on
11 April 1732. However, a note in the register which appears to refer to this
baptism entry states that “This Woman was alive and well on 18 Decm 1821”, which does not appear to have been
the case for the wife of Thomas Walton. There was also a Sarah, daughter of
James Heptonstall of Hoylandswaine, who was baptised at Silkstone on 16 April
1729. The marriage of Thomas Walton and Sarah Heppenstall was witnessed by a
Joseph Wright, probably the one of that name who married Mary Heppenstall at
High Hoyland in 1758. Both Sarah, daughter of Peter, and Sarah, daughter of
James, appear to have had a sister called Mary.

The baptism entry does not name the parents of Thomas but he may have been a son of the Thomas Walton whose wife Martha was buried at Cawthorne on 11 Jan 1702/03.
