WALTON OF HIGH HOYLAND
The age of the Thomas Walton who heads this account is given as thirty in abstracts of 1772 marriage licence records but that may be intended to mean at least thirty rather than an exact age. There was a Thomas, son of Thomas Walton, baptised at Cawthorne on 13 May 1727. There was also a Thomas, son of John and Hannah Walton, baptised at Cawthorne on 18 July 1743. The latter was probably the Thomas Walton of Cawthorne who married Sarah Hindle at Barnsley on 13 January 1780 when he was said to be aged thirty-six.
Sarah Heppenstall who married Thomas Walton at High Hoyland in 1759 was perhaps the Sarah, daughter of Peter Heppenstall of High Hoyland, who was baptised there on 11 April 1732. However, a note in the register which appears to refer to this baptism entry states that “This Woman was alive and well on 18 Decm 1821”, which does not appear to have been the case for the wife of Thomas Walton. There was also a Sarah, daughter of James Heptonstall of Hoylandswaine, who was baptised at Silkstone on 16 April 1729. The marriage of Thomas Walton and Sarah Heppenstall was witnessed by a Joseph Wright, probably the one of that name who married Mary Heppenstall at High Hoyland in 1758. Both Sarah, daughter of Peter, and Sarah, daughter of James, appear to have had a sister called Mary.

Denby parish registers (online at www.ancestry.com). His age is given as 90 in both the 1851 census returns and at his burial the next year, probably an exaggeration. It is given as 75 (that is, 75 to 79) in the 1841 census returns for Denby (National Archives, HO 107/1324/1, fol. 47).
High Hoyland parish registers (online at www.ancestry.com). He may have been somewhat older than usual when baptised as his baptism was on the same day as that of his sister Alice, and Matthew’s age is given as 58 in his burial entry.
Silkstone parish registers (online at www.ancestry.com). The entry describes the bridegroom as a bachelor but there does not seem to be another likely Matthew Walton. Mary, wife of Matthew Walton, was buried at Darton on 7 Nov 1810.
