COPLEY OF TANKERSLEY

The Silkstone parish registers give the marriage on 21 August 1717 of “Tho: Walton & Eliz: Copley both of Cawthorne”. However, the marriage bond is dated 22 August 1717 and gives the parties as Thomas Walton, aged thirty-four, of Cawthorne, and Ann Coppley, aged twenty-two, spinster, of “Bromily” (Bromley) in the parish of Tankersley. The burial in 1727 of Ann, wife of Thomas Walton, at Wortley (a chapelry in Tankersley which included Bromley) supports the name in the bond being correct.

Ann, daughter of Richard Copley, was baptised at Wortley in 1695. There was another Ann Copley, daughter of Thomas, baptised there in 1693, but she was buried in 1699 so could not be the one who married Thomas Walton.

A John Copley of Bromley was buried at Wortley on 1 April 1706. There is an administration record for his estate which I have not yet seen. Another John Copley, a carpenter, was buried at Wortley on 16 July 1716. John Copley and Elizabeth Berrie were married at Tankersley on 16 November 1668 and a John Copley, son of Thomas, was baptised at Tankersley on 4 February 1648/49.

2 RICHARD COPLEY, labourer, was baptised on 14 January 1671/72 at Tankersley, Yorkshire,[1] and buried on 16 August 1737 at Wortley.[2] He married on 27 November 1692 at Tankersley, ELIZABETH SIKES.[3]
