STAINCLIFF OF HORSFORTH

His parish register burial entry indicates that Michael Staincliff of Horsforth, in the parish of Guiseley, was born about 1755. A Michael, son of Eli Stancliffe of Clifton, husbandman, was baptised on 10 August 1757 at Hartshead, where Mally, daughter of Eli Stancliffe of Cock Walk was buried on 12 February 1758 and Mary Staincliff of Bellebridge, widow, was buried on 6 February 1763.[1] Mally may have been the Mary, daughter of Eli Stancliffe, who was baptised on 28 March 1756 at Lightcliffe.[2] A Judith, daughter of Eli Stancliffe, was baptised at Lightcliffe in 1765[3] and a Judith Stankliff married Robert Wood on 5 June 1791 at St Peter, Leeds,[4] perhaps indicating a move of some of the family in the direction of Leeds and Horsforth.

However, there was also at least one Staincliff couple in the parish of Guiseley in the right period to be Michael’s parents. Samuel Staincliff and Susanna Green were married at Guiseley on 15 April 1750 and Samuel Staincliff was buried there on 18 June 1767.[5]

Leeds apprenticeship records show that Michael Stancliff was apprenticed to William Naylor, wool stapler, in 1768.

The parentage of Hannah Swane, wife of Michael Staincliff, has not been determined. There was a Hannah, daughter of James and Elizabeth Swain, baptised at Kirkby Overblow in 1759, but that was probably the Hannah Swain who married Jonathan Middlebrough at Newton Kyme in 1792, as other members of the Kirkby Overblow family can be traced at Newton Kyme.

There are other Swain entries in the Horsforth registers which may be relevant to the origin of Hannah (Swane) Staincliff. On 8 May 1772, Mary, daughter of Hannah Swain, was buried at Horsforth. It is doubtful that the mother was the same person as Michael Staincliff’s wife Hannah as the latter was still having children baptised as late as 1803. This Mary may be the Mary, daughter of Thomas Swain of Kirkstall, who was baptised at Headingley on 17 April 1748. Thomas Swain and Hannah Balmforth were married at St Peter, Leeds, on 30 October 1733. The family evidently moved to nearby Horsforth as the 1781 baptism entry for William Swaine in the Sherburn in Elmet parish registers describes the child’s father Jonathan Swaine of Huddleston as “Son of Thos of Horsforth Forge-man by Hannah his Wife Dau: of Ralph Baumforth of Christal-Forge [Kirkstall Forge] Forge-man”. Jonathan, son of Thomas Swaine of Kirkstall, was baptised at Headingley in 1736. Hannah Swaine of Huddleston, widow, was buried at Sherburn in Elmet on 18 May 1803 when she was said to be aged ninety-four. If Hannah (Swane) Staincliff was a member of the family of Thomas and Hannah (Balmforth) Swain, then she was probably their granddaughter rather than a daughter.
