[27] T. W. Willis, ed., The Register of the Parish of Lanercost, 2 vols (Brampton and Beverley, 1908-12), 2:139, transcribes the bridegroom’s name as “John Smith”, but R. Morris Richardson, Edwin Dodds and Clement Singleton, Diocese of Carlisle Marriage Licence/Bonds, vol. 2 (1998), 110, gives him as John Stephenson of “Thwaites” in Lanercost and the intended bride as Isabel Maughan of Langlands in Lanercost, single woman, her parents being dead. The 1775 will of Henry Maughan of Whinnetley in Haydon Bridge mentions his sister Isabel Stephenson, wife of John Stephenson. There was also a John Stephenson, bachelor, who married Mary Carruthers at Lanercost in 1755. However, the residence of Swaites and naming of a son David support the identification of the John who married Isabel Maughan as the son of David Stephenson of Swaites. The John Stephenson who married Mary Carruthers may have been one of that name baptised at Nether Denton.

[34] A 1764 petition of John Stephenson of Brampton stated that he “has a wife and Six Children the two youngest of them being twins”, that his wife and one child had been ill and the petitioner was so weak that he could not follow any employment and had applied to the parish officers of Lanercost for subsistence until the family members regained their former health (Cumbria Archive Service, Q/11/1/306/55). Baptisms for five children of John are recorded in the registers of Lanercost. Further evidence for the identity of the other child would be desirable but Dorothy Stephenson who married Peter Henderson at Carlisle in 1780 and who was buried at Lanercost in 1786 aged 32 seems the most obvious candidate. The will of Joseph Stephenson (1757-1819) names his niece Nancy Potts of Wigton. An Ann Stephenson married John Potts at Hayton in 1803, and Ann, illegitimate daughter of Dorothy Stephenson from Carlisle, was baptised at Lanercost in 1778.
