[1] Will dated 28 Aug 1638, proved 1639, inventory dated 26 Sep 1638.

[2] The will of Nicholas Maughan names his wife “Ales” and leaves property to “my Eldest Sonne John Maughan... if his mother & hee can agree”. The will of Thomas Parker of Haydon Bridge, written in 1623, includes a bequest to Alice Maughan of Morralee and was witnessed by Nicholas Maughan of Morralee, Thomas Maughan his son, and Nicholas Maughan the younger of Morralee.

[4] Will of Nicholas Maughan.

[5] He may be the Thomas Maughan who married Mabel Farlam on 19 Feb 1627/28 at Whitfield. The inventory of a Mabel Maughan of Morralee, widow, was taken in 1683/84 by Nicholas Maughan of Whinnetley and others.

[6] Nuncupative will made ca 2 Feb 1659, proved 6 Mar 1668/69.

[7] Will dated 18 May 1666, acknowledged by the testator 21 Aug 1670, proved 1671.

[8] The will of John Maughan states that his son Nicholas was to give “unto his mother meat drink and Cloaths... dureing the said barbary life”. It is possible that Barbara was the Barbara Maughan who married Thomas Lee at St John Lee in 1674. However, she may be the Barbara Maughan of Morralee, care of John Maughan, who was buried at Haydon Bridge on 10 Jan 1701/02.

[9] Nicholas and Margaret are both named in the will of John Maughan. It is possible that there was also a son John as a John Maughan of Morralee was one of the men who took the inventory of John Maughan’s estate in 1670/71, and the appraisers of the inventory for Henry Maughan in 1668/69 included both John Maughan of Morralee the elder and John Maughan of Morralee the younger.

[10] She may have married Simon Smith in 1680. The inventory of Nicholas Maughan, taken in 1686/87, includes a debt to “Margaret Smith wife of Symond Smith”. However, there was more than one Margaret Maughan who could have married Simon Smith.

[16] The will of Nicholas Maughan leaves to his grandchild Robert Pearson property “which is all at Bishopfild”. Robert, son of Robert Pearson of Bishopfield, was baptised at Allendale on 4 May 1700 and Isabel, wife of Robert Pearson of Bishopfield was buried on 8 May 1700. The Prerogative & Exchequer Courts of York Probate Index, 1688-1858 (online at www.findmypast.co.uk) shows that administration of the estate of Isabel “Manhan Alias Pierson” of Bishopfield was granted in 1701. [41] T. W. Willis, ed., The Register of the Parish of Lanercost, 2 vols (Brampton and Beverley, 1908-12), 2:139, transcribes the bridegroom’s name as “John Smith”, but R. Morris Richardson, Edwin Dodds and Clement Singleton, Diocese of Carlisle Marriage Licence/Bonds, vol. 2 (1998), 110, gives him as John Stephenson of “Thwaites” in Lanercost and the intended bride as Isabel Maughan of Langlands in Lanercost, single woman, her parents being dead. The 1775 will of Henry Maughan of Whinnetley mentions his sister Isabel Stephenson, wife of John Stephenson.
