MEREDITH OF LLANBISTER

Baptisms for children of Thomas and Jane Meredith in the Llanbister parish registers in the 1720s and 1730s suggest the possibility of there being two such couples. For example, Sarah on 7 June 1727 is followed by Jacob on 10 January 1727/28 and then by Thomas on 21 December 1728. One Jane on 23 August 1730 is followed by another Jane on 2 January 1730/31. Although the baptism dates may be spaced differently from the birth dates, these are rather close together to all be children of the same parents.

The will of Thomas Meredith, written in 1767, sheds some light on the situation. It mentions his brother John, along with “Sara nicklas... Jain Lloyd... Mary Morgan and... Brigart Lloyd”. The women’s relationships to the testator are not explicitly stated, but the impression given is that they are his sisters.

The remaining children assigned to Thomas and Jane Meredith in the Llanbister parish registers, some of whom may still fit in the family covered below, are Thomas (baptised 26 February 1724/25 and buried 30 March 1725), Jacob (baptised 10 January 1727/28), Ann (baptised 23 Sep 1732) and Alice (baptised September 1734).

One Thomas Meredith was buried on 23 June 1758 at Llanbister and another on 7 June 1771 at the same place. The earlier of these is perhaps more likely to be the father of Bridget (Meredith) Lloyd and her siblings as the will of Thomas Meredith (1728-1768) does not mention either of his parents.

The will of Thomas Meredith, written in Dec 1767, does not name his wife but provision is made for “if my wife is with child”. No children are otherwise mentioned, indicating that the marriage may be been relatively recent at that time.
