JENKIN OF MORWENSTOW

The entry in the Morwenstow parish registers for the 1657/58 marriage of John and Honor (Jenkin) Chibbot identifies Honor as a daughter of John Jenkin.[1] Honor, daughter of John Jenking and Marie was baptised at Morwenstow in 1635[2] and “John Jenkin & Mary Smith, gent.” were married in 1633/34.[3] It is evident from chancery records that Richard Smith of Cornakey who died in 1695 was the half-brother of John Jenkin of Cornakey, who was the brother of Honor (Jenkin) Chibbot.[4] Richard Smith at the time of his death in 1695 was said to be in the seventy-first year of his age[5] and the Morwenstow parish registers record the baptism of Richard, son of Richard Smith, gentleman, and Mary, on 25 April 1624.[6] It is therefore apparent that Mary, wife of the older Richard Smith, was the same person who later married John Jenkin.

The 1695 will of Richard Smyth of Cornakey names several individuals who may give clues to his mother’s ancestry. He mentions, among others, his aged and infirm kinswoman Mary Bew, Charles Goard, Avise Cock and her daughter Mary, his kinsmen Robert Eare, clerk, and his brothers Richard Eare and Charles Eare, John Blight of Bodmin, two children of his niece Katherine Rogers, his kinsman George Bew, his kinsman John Rawling, John the son of Humphry Sink of Wadebridge, and John Yeo, Richard Yeo and Elizabeth Yeo, children of Francis Yeo of Morwenstow.[7]

There was a Richard Smith who married Patience, daughter of John Brode or Broad of Cornakey, in 1612 at St Columb Major. However, there appears to have been more than one closely linked Richard Smith in the relevant period and area.

A stillborn daughter of Mary Smith was buried at Morwenstow on 17 July 1631.

A John Jenkins of Goseham Mill married Faithful Parsons at Morwenstow in 1621/22. A Faithful Jenking was buried in 1679 at Hartland. There was a John Jenkyn, senior, of Welcombe, whose will was proved in 1665.
