HESLEDEN OF HEATON

The registers of Bradford show the marriage of John Hezledin and Sarah Deine on 22 July 1669. These appear to be the parents of Michael Hesleden of Heaton who married Mary Spencer in 1696. In 1674, Michael son of John “Castleden” of Allerton was baptised at Bradford. There does not seem to have been a relevant Castleden family in the area and it appears that the surname should be a form of the similar Hesleden. Sarah, daughter of John Aisleden of Allerton, was baptised in 1669/70, John, son of John Hezleden of Allerton in 1672, and Timothy, son of John Hassleden of the same place in 1677. These match with the father’s residence given at the baptism of Michael, and Michael Heselden had a son called Timothy baptised in 1701, so there is some onomastic support.

John Hesleden of Allerton may be the same person as the John Hasleden who married Grace Cowburn at Bingley on 6 December 1650. Mary, daughter of John Haslenden of Allerton, was baptised at Bingley on 15 July 1651.

It seems likely that the Hesledens of Allerton and Heaton were related to the family of Michael Hesleden of Ovenden whose will was written in 1654 mentioning sons called Michael and Timothy,[1] both names given to sons of John Hesleden of Allerton. However, the exact connection is not yet clear.

[10] Bradford parish registers (online at www.ancestry.com). The registers record the burial of another Michael Hesleden of Heaton on 14 Apr 1719 but he is described as “a Young Man” which does not seem a likely description for the Michael who had had children baptised over twenty years previously.

[12] Bradford parish registers (online at www.ancestry.com). After Mary’s death, Michael may have married again, on 2 Apr 1727 at Keighley, Sarah Smith, who was buried at Bradford on 27 Apr 1734. However, the Michael Hesleden of Heaton who had a daughter Frances baptised at Bradford in 1731 may be a different man from the one who married Mary Spencer.

[13] Bradford parish registers (online at www.ancestry.com). The spelling Grandzees for the name of this daughter of Michael Hesleden seems clear in her baptism entry in both the parish registers and bishops’ transcripts, but it does not seem to occur elsewhere. There is a possibility that it is a mistake for Frances as a Thomas Stead and Frances Hesleden were married at Bradford in 1725.

There was also a Timothy Hesledine of Heaton buried at Bradford on 18 Mar 1778, perhaps the son of that name mentioned in the 1747 will of John Hesleden of Heaton (Borthwick Institute).
