GOTT OF SILSDEN AND HOLBECK

John Gott of Holbeck, a Quaker, died in 1712/13. His widow Tabitha remained a Quaker but his surviving children (by an earlier marriage to a woman named Mary) left the Society of Friends and can be traced in the registers of the chapelry of Holbeck and parish of Leeds. The records of the Brighouse Monthly Meeting show that before living in Holbeck, John had resided in Gildersome.

John appears to be the son of that name mentioned in the 1696 will of William Gott of Silsden Moor in the parish of Kildwick. There is good evidence that William’s family had connections with the Gildersome area, as his daughter Mary married Thomas Crowder who is stated in the marriage entry in the Kildwick registers to be of the parish of Batley. The latter was the parish in which Gildersome was situated. In addition, the Wakefield quarter sessions records include mention in 1690 that “Christopher Gott is lately come to inhabit in the Towne of Gildersome from the Towne of Silsden where he was last lawfully setled” and it was ordered that he be removed to Silsden.[1] The witnesses at the marriage of John Gott of Gildersome to his second wife Tabitha in 1704 included both a Christopher Gott and a Mary Crowder.[2]

The Kildwick registers show two plausible baptisms for William: one in 1614 (son of William and Margaret) and one in 1624 (son of Christopher and Elizabeth). A clue to William’s parentage is that his will of 1696 leaves “to Jane Gott my sister five shillings”. However, there does not otherwise seem to be any indication that either the William baptised in 1614 or the one baptised in 1624 had a sister called Jane. A search of the parish registers reveals only one likely candidate, that is to say Jane, widow of Jonas Gott. Therefore, it appears that the testator was referring to his sister-in-law and that he was a brother of Jonas Gott. This allows him to be identified as a son of Christopher and Elizabeth.

A Christopher Gott, son of Robert and Grace, was baptised at Kildwick in 1586 but his identity with the Christopher who married Elizabeth is made more complicated by the presence in the area at the time of more than one man of the name. In particular, there was a Christopher Gott who married Sarah Brigg at Kildwick in 1610 and who seems to have moved to Thorlby in the parish of Skipton by 1614/15 when his son Henry was baptised. Christopher Gott of Thorlby was buried at Skipton in 1631 and Sarah Gott, widow, of Thorlby, was buried at Skipton in 1655. Some clarity is provided by a record of 1626 in which Robert Gotte of Cringles in Silsden, yeoman, Christopher Gotte of the same, his eldest son, William Butterfeild of Bingley, tanner, and Richard Gotte another of Robert’s sons, assigned property to Arthur Blaykey of Nesfield, yeoman.[3] In conjunction with the Kildwick parish registers, the names of these sons indicate that the Robert in the assignment was the one married to Grace. William Butterfield of Bingley acting with them confirms this, as Margaret Gott, daughter of Robert and Grace, married as her second husband, in 1624 at Bingley, William Butterfield. The assignment shows that Robert’s son Christopher was living in Silsden in 1626 and he can therefore be distinguished from Christopher Gott of Thorlby. Furthermore, it is stated that Christopher was Robert’s eldest son, which assuages any doubt that he survived to adulthood due to the baptism of another Christopher Gott, son of Robert and Grace, in 1603. It was not unknown at the time for living siblings to have the same name.

After the death of Grace, Robert Gott may have married, on 16 Jan 1614/15 at Kildwick, Agnes Laycock (Kildwick parish registers, online at www.ancestry.com). However, the presence of more than one Robert Gott in the parish means that this is not immediately clear.

[8] They may also have been the parents of Isabel Gott, daughter of “Roberti et Isabellæ”, baptised on 29 Jan 1597/98, in which case the child’s name has been incorrectly repeated as the mother’s name in the Kildwick parish registers (online at www.ancestry.com). Another possible child is Mary Gott, buried at Kildwick on 29 Aug 1607 as “Maria Gott infans fil: Rob: Silsden”.

Henry was mentioned as “my grand childe Henry Goot” in the 1619 will of William Ward of Draughton.

[46] Kildwick parish registers (online at www.ancestry.com). Details of his later life are unclear as there were multiple men of the name who have not yet been adequately differentiated. One Christopher Gott was buried on 31 Aug 1718 at Birstall having married first, on 22 Jul 1681 at Baildon, Mary Booth, and second, on 9 Jan 1694/95 at Birstall, Grace Law. Another Christopher Gott was of Sutton and married on 4 Feb 1682/83 at Kildwick, Mary Swinden. A Christopher Gott of Silsden was an alehouse keeper in 1697 (West Yorkshire Archive Service, QS4/18, fol. 54).

[53] Kildwick parish registers (online at www.ancestry.com). There were multiple William Gotts in the parish, but this was evidently the marriage of the William who was the son of William and Jennet (Boulton) Gott. In the 1696-97 probate record of the older William Gott, two of the parties in the bond are the testator’s son William, described as a badger, and Jonas Booth. It is apparent from the will of Jonas Booth (dated 22 Nov 1709, proved 20 Apr 1710, Silsden peculiar court, Borthwick Institute) that he was the father of Agnes (Booth) Gott. In addition, the 1736/37 burial entry of William Gott describes him as a maltster, an occupation matching badger, and the will of the William buried in 1736/37 allows him to be identified as the one who married Agnes Booth.

[54] Kildwick parish registers (online at www.ancestry.com): “Infans Guliel: Gott non bap: de Cringles”.

[55] The 1696 will of William Gott explicitly states the order of his sons as “Thomas Gott my eldest sonn”, “John Gott my second sonn”, “Chris: Gott my third sonn” and “William Gott my fourth sonn”. It is not known whether John was older or younger than his sister Elizabeth.
