ELLEY OF MALTON AND ABERFORD
The surname of this family is usually spelt Elley in the Malton registers but members are recorded under various spellings at Aberford and Barwick, including Ellar and Ellard.
The connection between Malton and Aberford is proved by the entry for the baptism of Benjamin Chambers in 1779 in the Kirkby Wharfe parish registers. The child’s mother is recorded as “Ann Dr of Thomas Elley of Abberford Jockey by Mary his Wife Dr of — Robinson of Malton Butcher”.

Aberford parish registers (online at www.ancestry.com). The burial entry gives Elizabeth’s age as 84, which seems to be an exaggeration. The marriage bond of 15 Aug 1766 describes her as “aged twenty five Years, and upwards” (Borthwick Institute).
