ELLEY OF MALTON AND ABERFORD

 

The surname of this family is usually spelt Elley in the Malton registers but members are recorded under various spellings at Aberford and Barwick, including Ellar and Ellard.

 

The connection between Malton and Aberford is proved by the entry for the baptism of Benjamin Chambers in 1779 in the Kirkby Wharfe parish registers. The child’s mother is recorded as “Ann Dr of Thomas Elley of Abberford Jockey by Mary his Wife Dr of — Robinson of Malton Butcher”.[1]

2          THOMAS ELLEY of Malton and Aberford, jockey, was baptised in November 1714 at New Malton[17] and buried on 18 June 1792 at Aberford.[18] He married on 25 July 1741 at New Malton, MARY ROBINSON.[19] She was buried on 18 October 1767 at Barwick in Elmet.[20]
