CAPPER OF ABERFORD

I have not yet been able to find a baptism of the Richard Capper who married Ann Johnson at Aberford in 1802, but he appears to have been a son of Charles Capper and Elizabeth. Charles and Elizabeth are the only Cappers I have found in the area who were having children baptised during the time around Richard’s birth. Charles’s residence at the time of his burial was Lotherton cum Aberford. Land tax records show that Richard Capper also resided in Lotherton in the early nineteenth century.[1] Lotherton was a township in the parish of Sherburn in Elmet but it included part of the town of Aberford.[2] Many events concerning Lotherton residents are therefore recorded in the Aberford parish registers.

Charles was the name of the first son of Richard Capper and Ann Johnson and their first daughter was called Elizabeth. If the age of Richard Capper given at his death in 1851 is correct, then he was born between January 1777 and January 1778. There is a gap in the recorded baptisms of the children of Charles Capper and Elizabeth between those of Ruth in April 1775 and James in September 1779, which covers the probable date of Richard’s birth. The death in 1845 of James Capper, son of Charles and Elizabeth, was registered by Richard Capper of Aberford. Although no relationship between James and Richard is given on the death certificate, it strongly indicates that they were members of the same family.

Charles and Elizabeth apparently had other children for whom no baptisms have been found. The marriage of their son John was witnessed by a Thomas Capper and a Thomas Capper of Aberford was buried at Doncaster in 1816 when his age was given as forty-five.

Charles Capper of Heath in the parish of Warmfield seems likely to be another son of Charles and Elizabeth. His age at burial suggests he was born about 1773 which would fit between the baptisms of William in 1771 and Ruth in 1775. No other plausible parentage for him has been located and one of his descendants has a DNA match of 18 cM with Derek Vincent Davies, a descendant of William and Elizabeth (Capper) Lawrence.

John Mountain of Aberford, butcher, was a party to the bond. A John Mountain of Swillington married Mary Cowper at Sherburn in 1775. Mary was a daughter of Thomas and Martha (Evers) (Speight) Cowper of Lennerton who were married at Swillington in 1744.

One possible baptism for her took place in 1778 at Whitkirk, where the parents were John Johnson of Austhorpe, collier, and his wife Catharine. John Johnson and Catherine Walton were married at Whitkirk in 1773.
