DICKINSON OF HOLBECK
Census returns
show that John Dickinson who married Mary Ann Dalmer in 1832 at St. Peter,
Leeds, was born at Leeds in about 1812. I have not yet found his parentage,
though there are some possible baptisms for him at St. Peter: John son of
Alexander Dickinson was baptised on 16 September
1811; and John son of Joseph and Elizabeth Dickinson on 31 August 1813. Joseph
is described in the parish registers as a “Soldier in the 2nd West Militia” and
his son John is stated to have been born in November 1812.
John Dickinson
seems to have had some kind of connection with a family called Shaw. The
marriage of Henry Braithwaite and Harriet Shaw at St. Peter, Leeds, on 24 June
1832, was witnessed by John Dickinson and Mary Ann Dalmer and the marriage of
John Dickinson and Mary Ann Dalmer a few weeks later was witnessed by a Harriet
Shaw (evidently a different person from the wife of Henry Braithwaite). The
Harriet who married Henry Braithwaite later married William Swift and living
with them as a visitor at the time of the 1861 census was an Emma Dickinson,
aged nine. This was not John and Mary Ann (Dalmer) Dickinson’s daughter Emma,
who was older, but appears to have been a daughter of John and Martha (Shaw)
(Dickinson) Dickinson. Martha’s first husband was Joseph Dickinson (son of John
Dickinson, farmer) and her second husband John was a son of William Dickinson,
tailor.
I am no longer
actively researching this family but retain the information here as part of the
results of my investigation of the ancestry of John Atkinson.

DICKINSON
JOHN DICKINSON of Leylands,
Leeds, Yorkshire, of Holbeck, and of Wortley, handle setter, was born ca 1812
at Leeds[1] and died on 21
March 1873 at Holbeck, Yorkshire.[2] He married on 28
July 1832 at St. Peter, Leeds, MARY ANN DALMER,[3] daughter of
Richard and Elizabeth (Hooper) Dalmer (see here).
Mary Ann was born at Trowbridge, Wiltshire, baptised there on 2 August 1812,
and died on 30 October 1887 at Holbeck.
Children of John and Mary Ann (Dalmer) Dickinson:

returns, Wortley (HO 107/2314, fol. 331). It is possible that she was the
Elizabeth Tollemoor Dickinson who was born on 18 Feb
1835 and baptised on 15 Mar 1835 at St. Peter, Leeds,
with Tollemoor perhaps being an unusual spelling of
the surname Dalmer (sometimes spelt Dallimore etc.). However, the parents are
given in the baptism entry as John Dickinson of New Road, cloth dresser, and
Elizabeth, whereas the mother of Elizabeth (Dickinson) Atkinson was Mary Ann
(Dalmer) Dickinson.

Marriage certificate. At the time of the 1861 census, Thomas Atkinson, son of
Samuel and Elizabeth (Dickinson) Atkinson, was living with John and Mary Ann
(Dalmer) Dickinson and was described as a grandson. In 1871, John and Mary Ann
had their grandson John Atkinson in their household.
