Notes

The date of birth of Katherine (Mitchell) Starmer is given as 30 Dec 1885 in the 1939 register and as 30 Dec 1884 in the entry for her death in the civil registration indexes. At her marriage in 1905, she seems to have been unable or unwilling to provide details of her father as he is entered as “— Mitchell deceased” and no occupation is given for him. The most likely candidate for her in the 1901 census returns is a Catherine Mitchell, aged fifteen, working as a housemaid at a children’s home in Kirkdale (National Archives, RG 13/3465, fol. 79). This would be the Kate Mitchell, aged five, who was recorded in the Walton workhouse register of servants and apprentices as being assigned on 4 Sep 1891 to Miss Hornby (Liverpool Record Office, 353 WES/13/4). In 1891, Mary Hornby was the head of the orphanage or children’s home in Kirkdale at which Catherine Mitchell was living ten years later (National Archives, RG 12/2959, fol. 44). A Catherine Mitchell living at the time of the 1891 census at Fazakerley cottage homes was evidently the same person. She is stated to have been born at Everton but her age is obscured (National Archives, RG 12/2981, fol. 35). The records of the cottage homes show that on 29 Apr 1890, Catherine Mitchell was admitted. She was stated to have been born in 1886 and her mother is given as Mary E. of Walton workhouse (Liverpool Record Office, 352 SOC/1/1). The 1891 census returns for Walton workhouse include Mary Ellen Mitchell, said to be married, aged 22, a bookbinder, and born in Liverpool (National Archives, RG 12/2981, fol. 68).
