This table is based on the assumption that the prime
minister was a son of his mother’s husband. The ODNB reports that “Speculation that Eden could actually have been
the son of George Wyndham, the Victorian statesman and man of letters, to whom
he bore a striking physical resemblance, is inaccurate, as Wyndham was in South
Africa at the time of Eden’s conception”.
The date of birth of Frances Wilhelmina
Schaffalitzky is written as 15 January 1820, with the year crossed out and
changed to 1819, in the Bengal Civil Fund family register of subscribers
(British Library, IOR/L/AG/23/5/1). However, this was recorded in adulthood,
and if 15 Jan is correct, the year seems more likely to be 1820 as originally
written. Her parents were married on 5 Jan 1819 and the baptism of Frances on
26 Sep 1823 states that she was “aged 3 years”.
