Notes

The maiden surname of Winifred, wife of John Garoghan, is given variously on the birth certificates of her sons Thomas (b 20 Apr 1849), James (b 28 Apr 1851) and John (b 25 Jul 1855) as O’Rourke, Groarck, and O Hara.

Elizabeth (Bernstein) Garoghan’s father is given on her marriage certificate as Lewis Burnstein, deceased, a traveller. Her parents appear to be Lewis Bernstein and Mary, formerly Geary, who had children born or baptised (with various spellings of the surnames recorded) in London, Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham. Mary seems to be the Mary Geary, spinster, who married John Dixon on 29 Sep 1868 at Birmingham register office. Although recorded under her maiden name, her identity with the putative wife of Lewis Bernstein is supported by one of the witnesses to the 1868 marriage being “Lewis Birnstien” and by the appearance in the 1871 census returns for Birmingham of Joseph Burnsteen, aged 12, described as a son of John Dixon. The birth on 24 Dec 1858 of Joseph “Barnsteel”, son of “Ludovici et Marić Annć Barnsteel (olim Geary)” is recorded in the Catholic registers of Birmingham.

A Charlotte Pedgeon, spinster, married Thomas Mills at Stoke Damerel on 22 Sep 1834. She seems to be the same person as the Charlotte Padgan, spinster, who married John McDowell at East Stonehouse on 29 Jun 1835, as no further record has been found of the couple Thomas and Charlotte Mills, and there is only one evident baptism for a Charlotte Pidgeon or variants in the likely time period. The Charlotte who married John McDowell is known from the certificate for her second marriage to have been a daughter of James Pidgeon.
