TREVITHICK OF ST ENODER

The will of William Trevethacke of St Enoder, Cornwall, gentleman, dated 2 February 1657, leaves money to the poor of the parishes of St Enoder and St Eval and names among others his wife Frances, son William, daughter Thomasine, daughter Mary, daughter Grace, Christopher Trevethicke of London, taylor, and the testator’s “welbeloved Freinds and Alyes” John Bawden, Samuel Gully and William Gully. A codicil of 7 July 1658 mentions William Trevethack of Padstow (Petrockstow) in Devon, clerk. The will was proved on 10 December 1659.[1]

Administration of the estate of Lewis Stribley of St Wenn was granted on 8 November 1689 to William Trevithick of St Enoder, during the minority of Lewis’s son William Stribley,[2] confirming that the Mary Trevithick who married Lewis Stribley at St Wenn in 1671 was the Mary Trevithick baptised at St Enoder in 1651/52.

There are earlier Trevithicks recorded in the St Enoder parish registers, including Gregory Trevithick and Katherine Hockin who were married in 1611.[3] A connection with the Trevithicks of Great Trevemeder in St Eval seems likely.

[7] Frances is named in William’s will and in some of the baptism entries for his children in the St Enoder parish registers. Her parentage is unclear. Given the mention of Gullys in the will of William Trevithick, there is a possibility that she was the Frances, daughter of Francis and Mary Gully, who was baptised at St Enoder on 5 Aug 1621. However, Frances Gully may have married William Woolridge of Creed. Mary, wife of Francis Gully, was a Trevithick, so that may be the reason for the association between the families.
