SCOBLE OF STAVERTON

 

The parentage of the John Scoble who heads the account below is unclear but the 1654 will of Philip Scoble of Staverton gives some clues.[1] Relationships to the testator are not stated, but Philip mentions, among others: the children of “John Scobble of Staverton” (named as Susan, Rebecca, John, Jeffrey and Hugh) and John’s wife Rebecca; the five children of “Jeffery Scobble” of Woodleigh;[2] and some children of “Jeffery Scobble of Deane Prier”.[3]

1          JOHN SCOBLE of Staverton, Devon, was buried on 23 September 1677 at Staverton.[4] He married first, on 24 June 1630 at Staverton, MARIAN BURDE.[5] She was buried on 7 June 1635 at Staverton.[6] John married second, on 1 February 1635/36 at Buckfastleigh, REBECCA HODGE.[7] She was buried on 22 February 1680/81 at Staverton.[8]

2          JEFFREY SCOBLE of Staverton, yeoman, was baptised on 3 December 1637 at Staverton[26] and buried on 10 July 1721 at Staverton.[27] He married on 21 September 1675 at Staverton, JOAN FULL.[28] She was buried on 29 March 1733 at Staverton.[29]

3          JEFFREY SCOBLE of Staverton was baptised on 24 September 1678 at Staverton[41] and buried on 6 January 1763 at Staverton.[42] He married on 11 July 1699 at Littlehempston, ANN PALK,[43] daughter of Peter and Julian (Emmett) Palk. Ann was baptised on 25 September 1677 at Littlehempston[44] and buried on 19 January 1741/42 at Staverton.[45]

She may be the one of that name mentioned in the 1609 will of Thomas Hodge of Buckfastleigh as a daughter of the testator’s son Walter Hodge of Staverton (National Archives, PROB 11/126/205). However, that could be the Rebecca Hodge who married Gregory Deaman at Buckfastleigh on 1 Jul 1616. More than one Walter Hodge was in the area at the time.
