SAMPSON OF PARLINGTON

Mary Sampson married William Standbank on 23 July 1724 at Aberford. Three potential baptisms for her were found:

Mary Sampson, bap 25 Sep 1704, Aberford, daughter of Matthias Sampson of Aberford[1]

Mary Sampson, bap 12 Apr 1706, Sherburn in Elmet, daughter of William Sampson junior of Milford[2]

Mary Sampson, bap 27 Apr 1707, Aberford, daughter of Thomas Sampson of Parlington[3]

The Mary who was a daughter of William seems to be accounted for by the marriage on 21 July 1724 at Pontefract of John Sharpass of Pontefract and Mary Sampson of South Milford, aged eighteen.[4]

William Pool of Rothwell married Mary Sampson of Aberford parish at Aberford on 9 November 1727.[5] The marriage bond of 3 October 1727 gives Mary’s age as twenty-three,[6] which fits with the baptism of Matthias’s daughter of that name. However, William Pool’s wife was stated (without discussion of the evidence) by George Denison Lumb to be a daughter of Thomas and Jane (Ellis) Sampson[7] and the use of the name Matthias for a son of William Standbank and Mary Sampson suggests that it was the latter who was the daughter of Matthias Sampson.

Clarity is provided by the 1794 will of John Sampson, through which it can be confirmed that Mary (Sampson) Standbank was a daughter of Matthias. John names, among others, “my Nephew Thomas Stanbank of Lane End near Chawbent in the County of Lancaster Victualler”, “my Nephew John Stanbank of the Parish of Tadcaster in the County of York Grazier (Brother of the said Thomas Stanbank)”, “my late Brother Edward Sampson” and “my Brother in Law Richard Shippen of Aberford in the County of York Shopkeeper”.[8] Richard Shippen and Susanna Sampson, both of Aberford, were married in 1738 at Ledsham. Edward, son of Matthias Sampson, was baptised at Thorner in 1714. The parish registers of Otley show that Susanna, daughter of “Mr. Mathew Sampson of Newhall” was baptised in 1716, and John, son of Matthias (altered from Matthew) Sampson of Newhall, farmer, was baptised in 1717/18.

In 1551, a William Sampson of Parlington made his will, leaving his estate to his son and executor William. The will was proved on 17 February 1551/52. Abstracts of the York cause papers list a William Sampson of Parlington, husbandman, aged twenty-seven, in a case of 1564. If the testator’s son of 1551 proved the will himself then he would have been older by 1564 than indicated by the cause paper details, so it is possible that these were two different men of the same name.

[43] The Archbishop of York Marriage Licences Index, 1613-1839 (online at www.findmypast.co.uk) shows a licence was issued for Leonard Sampson of Aberford and Jane Burley on 24 Aug 1668. Jane, wife of Leonard Sampson, was buried at Aberford on 23 Jun 1694 (Aberford parish registers, online at www.findmypast.co.uk). Their marriage has not been found under those names in the parish registers. However, “John Sampson & Eliza: Burley” were married at Whitkirk on 25 Aug 1668 (Whitkirk parish registers, online at www.ancestry.com). As this is one day after the licence was granted, and no other obvious trace has been found of the couple John and Elizabeth, this seems, despite both forenames being different, to be the marriage of Leonard and Jane.

However, the will of Thomas Sampson, written in 1681/82, refers to his sister Elizabeth as “Elizabeth Sampson”.

There was an Ellen Blyth who married Richard Vevers about 1666, but “Hellen the wife of Mr Richard Vevers of Scoles” was buried at Barwick in Elmet in 1679. A licence was granted on 10 Feb 1668 for William Vevers of Scholes to marry Ellen Burman (Archbishop of York Marriage Licences Index, 1613-1839, online at www.findmypast.co.uk). William Vevers of Barwick in Elmet and Mary (sic) Burman were granted a licence to marry and were married at Garforth on 13 Sep 1669 (Garforth bishop’s transcripts, online at www.findmypast.co.uk). An Ellen Greene married William Vevers of Barwick at Kippax in 1671. An “Ellinor Sampson of Potterton” was buried on 18 Jan 1729/30 (Barwick in Elmet parish registers, online at www.ancestry.com).

[72] Walton-le-Dale parish registers: “Matthias Sampson of Abbaford in [the] County of Yorke Yeoman and Elizabeth Sargent of Walton”. There are many Sargent entries in the Walton-le-Dale parish registers but no obvious baptism for Elizabeth. Elizabeths baptised in 1676 (daughter of William), 1677 (daughter of William) and 1689/90 (daughter of Thomas) all appear to have died young. A Robert Sargent and Elizabeth Pilkinton were married at Walton in 1698/99 but the burial in 1705 of Elizabeth, wife of Robert Sargent, makes it doubtful that Elizabeth (Pilkinton) Sargent could be the wife of Matthias Sampson.

There was also a “Mary Wife of William Standbank Butcher” buried on 27 May 1757 at Aberford but that seems more likely to be a wife of William and Mary’s son William (baptised in 1725) who remarried later in 1757, although his wife would have been Ann rather than Mary unless he had another marriage which has not been traced. A William, son of William and Mary Standbank, was baptised at West Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, in 1756, but it is not clear whether that was the same family.

[85] Edward’s residence is given as Woolley at the time of his marriage, and in the entry for the baptism of his daughter Mary on 13 Mar 1739/40 he is described as “Servant to Mr Wentworth” (Holy Trinity, Goodramgate, York, parish registers, online at www.findmypast.co.uk). Godfrey Wentworth of Woolley was a member of parliament for York, 1741-47: Romney Sedgwick, ed., The History of Parliament: The House of Commons, 1715-1754, 2 vols (London, 1970), 2:528. Mary is mentioned in the 1794 will of John Sampson as “Mary Kay the only daughter of my late Brother Edward Sampson”. William Kay, butcher, married Mary Sampson of Newby Wiske, spinster, at Topcliffe on 8 Aug 1784 (Topcliffe parish registers, online at www.findmypast.co.uk). The entry gives William’s age as 25 and Mary’s as 39, the latter evidently understated, perhaps due to Mary being considerably older than her husband.

This is a few weeks earlier than the baptism date in the Otley parish registers and may have been John’s date of birth.
