ROWLAND OF DALSTON

The paternity of Martha Rowland who married Thomas Carlile in 1697/98 at Dalston is established by the 1710 will of Edward Rowland of Buckabank in Dalston, which mentions “Martha Carlile my Daughter”.

One Edward Rowland was baptised at Dalston in 1635, son of Edward Rowland, and another was baptised there in 1640, son of William Rowland. However, the 1681 will of William Rowland does not name a son Edward, so it seems unlikely that the Edward baptised in 1640 was living at that date. William’s will was witnessed (and apparently written out) by an Edward Rowland whose signature shows him to be the one who married Isabel Brisco.[1] It seems that both William and the older Edward (father of the Edward baptised in 1635) were sons of Edward Rowland and Marion Tomlinson who were married at Dalston in 1592.

It is apparent that they were nonconformists, at least for some time.
