NEWPORT OF BARROW

Records from 1741, during the pregnancy of Elizabeth Jellicoe, a single woman, name Matthew Woodward of Dunham-on-the-Hill, blacksmith, as the father of the child. The men who joined him in the associated bond were Matthew Newport of Great Barrow, yeoman, and Robert Cook of Manley, blacksmith.[1] Margaret Woodward, widow, had married Robert Cook in 1719. It would therefore seem that Matthew Woodward was a son of John and Margaret (Newport) Woodward who were married in 1707 at Frodsham and that the bondsmen joining him in 1741 were his uncle and his stepfather.

The baptisms of Margaret and Matthew, children of William Newport, took place at Barrow in 1678 and 1692 respectively.

The chronology indicates that more than one William Newport was having children in the area. Mary, daughter of William Newport, baptised at Barrow on 21 April 1681, and Henry, son of William Newport, baptised at Holy Trinity, Chester, on 15 May 1681, less than a month later, are unlikely to be siblings. One William Newport of Barrow, husbandman, made a bond for marrying Eleanor Ridgate in 1668, and a William Newport of Barrow married Mary Manley at St Oswald, Chester, in 1676. There was also a marriage between William Newport and Elizabeth Sumner at St Mary, Chester, in 1682/83.

One William Newport was a son of Ann Newport of Barrow, widow, who made her will in 1695.
