MELLOW OF TALLAND
The 1640 will of Peter Mellow of Talland mentions his daughter Epiphany.[1] The will of Thomas Mellow of Lanteglos by Fowey, also dated 1640, names “Epiphanie Mellowe the daughter of Peter Mellow”[2] and the 1663 will of Thomas’s widow Elizabeth (Francis) (Mellow) Manaton mentions “Epiphany the wife of Francis Wills” in among several Mellow legatees.[3] It therefore appears that the wife of Francis Wills was a daughter of Peter Mellow. The birth record of Peter Wills, son of Francis, names the child’s mother Epiphany.

[3] Kresen Kernow, AP/M/891; Ronald Ames Hill, The Manaton Family of Manaton in Cornwall (Star, Idaho, 2014), 98-99. Together with her will, some details of Elizabeth’s family background can be deduced from Norman J.G. Pounds, ed., The Parliamentary Survey of the Duchy of Cornwall, 2 vols (Torquay, 1982-84), 1:106-07, and the will of her stepfather Henry Foote (Kresen Kernow, AP/F/90). She presumably married Anthony Manaton at Lansallos on 27 Apr 1642, despite the different surname given for the bridegroom in abstracts of the marriage records for the parish.
[4] Will dated 31 Dec 1621, inventory taken 7 Jan 1621/22 (Kresen Kernow, AP/M/347). There is a monumental inscription at Talland to a Thomas Mellow and his wife Joan but no dates of death are given for them so it is not clear whether it relates to this couple.
[5] The will of Joan Mellow also mentions a Thomas Mellow and William Mellow but does not make their relationship explicit. They may be the Thomas Mellow of Lanteglos by Fowey who made his will in 1640 (National Archives, PROB 11/186/295) and William Mellow of Talland whose will was written in 1634 (Kresen Kernow, AP/M/697). Thomas’s will mentions his brother John Mellow.
[7] The will of Joan Mellow mentions her daughter “Elizebeth Dibbell” (Kresen Kernow, AP/M/347). Elizabeth’s husband may be the Thomas Dybble or Deeble who took the inventory of Peter Mellow’s estate in 1640.

[15] Cornwall OPC Database (www.cornwall-opc-database.org); Kresen Kernow, AP/M/1925. The distinctive signature of Thomas Mellow on his will allows him to be identified as the one of that name who took the inventory of the estate of Mary (Mellow) Mellow whose 1683 will mentions “Thomas Mellow my brother” (Kresen Kernow, AP/M/1632). His signature can also be seen elsewhere, including in association with Francis Wills. Another Thomas Mellow is mentioned in the 1663 will of Elizabeth (Francis) (Mellow) Manaton (“Thomas Mellow of St Pynnocke… John the sonne of the said Thomas Mellow”): Kresen Kernow, AP/M/891. That Thomas was perhaps the one mentioned in the 1640 will of Elizabeth’s husband Thomas Mellow of Lanteglos by Fowey as “Thomas Mellowe the younger the sonne of John Mellowe my brother” (National Archives, PROB 11/186/295).
[16] Kresen Kernow, AP/M/1925; Kresen Kernow, BWLO/63. The will of Thomas Mellow leaves a guinea to Elizabeth Anderton and the 1729 will of Elizabeth Anderton mentions her “Cosen Jane Mellow” (Kresen Kernow, AP/A/704).
