DAVIES OF LLANSANTFFRAED CWMDEUDDWR

The parentage of Mary Davies who married Richard Ingram at Llansantffraed Cwmdeuddwr in 1788 is provided by her monumental inscription at Dolau Baptist chapel in Nantmel. The inscription records that Edward Davies of Glan Elan in Llansantffraed Cwmdeuddwr died in 1813 aged seventy-seven, his wife Elizabeth died in 1813 aged seventy-four, and Mary, wife of Richard Ingram and daughter of the said Edward and Elizabeth, died in 1817 aged forty-seven.

Another inscription at Dolau chapel relating to other Davieses seems to be relevant. It mentions David Davies of Trevlin in Nantmel who died in 1854 aged seventy-eight and his sister Elizabeth who died in 1835 aged sixty-three and was the wife of John Price. I have not yet found explicit confirmation of the parentage of these siblings but they appear to have been children of Edward and Elizabeth. A transcription of the gravestones at the chapel, which records the inscriptions by location, enumerates the one for David and his sister Elizabeth immediately after the one for Mary (Davies) Ingram and her parents. Furthermore, the baptism entry for David’s son Richard in May 1813 in the Llansantffraed Cwmdeuddwr parish registers shows that David was then living at Glan Elan which is the residence given on Edward’s inscription. In addition, David and his sister Elizabeth are recorded to have been living in the parish of Llangurig in 1797 and that was the parish given as the residence of Mary (Davies) Ingram at the time of her marriage in 1788.

An Edward Davies married Elizabeth Davies at Llangurig on 3 April 1764. However, this Elizabeth died later the same year,[1] so could not have been the wife of Edward Davies of Glan Elan who died in 1813.

Edward Davies and Elizabeth of Glan Elan seem to be the Edward Davies and Elizabeth Pryce or Price married at Llandinam in 1768. Edward was stated to be of the parish of St Harmon which fits with the place of birth of St Harmon given for David Davies in the 1851 census returns.

The ancestry of Edward Davies is unclear and there were multiple men of that name in the area. However, a Thomas Davies of St Harmon who wrote his will in 1785 and left a legacy to “the Elders Governors or Managers of the Doleau and Garth-fach Churches of the Baptists” may be a connection.

The parentage of Elizabeth Pryce is also undetermined. An Elizabeth Pryce was baptised at Llandinam on 23 January 1739/40, daughter of Edward and Jane, but the 1774 will of Edward Pryce of Llandinam does not mention any daughters. A possible clue to the parentage of Elizabeth (Pryce) Davies is that the marriage of Richard and Mary (Davies) Ingram was witnessed by a Benjamin Price. There was a Benjamin Price who was a son of Isaac and Elizabeth (Whildin) Price of St Harmon who were married in 1758 at Llandinam when Isaac was of the parish of Llanfihangel Abergwesyn.

In the 1851 census returns, David Davies is recorded as a visitor in the household of a younger Benjamin Price. This Benjamin, a Baptist, was born in 1819 at Llandinam. His father was John Price of Garthfawr, Llandinam, and his mother was Ann, daughter of John Price of Park, Llandinam

The signature of a David Davies who married Elizabeth Thomas at Llandinam on 10 May 1804 is similar to that of David Davies who witnessed the marriage of Elizabeth (Davies) (Kendrick) Price in 1810. However, the age of Elizabeth Thomas was given as twenty in 1804, whereas the monumental inscription for Elizabeth, wife of David Davies of Nantmel, gives her age as 56 in 1834, so if these were the same David Davies then he probably married more than once.
