ROBINS OF LOSTWITHIEL

The 1704 marriage entry for Francis Wills and Elizabeth in the Lostwithiel parish registers does not give the bride’s surname. However, probate records allow her to be placed as a member of a Robins family. The will of William Clark of Tywardreath, dated 1713, mentions his kinsman John Robins of Lostwithiel along with John’s brother James Robins and their sister Elizabeth Wills.[1] The will of James Robins of Lostwithiel, written in 1749/50, mentions several nephews and nieces, including “my Neice Epiphany Briant”.[2] Epiphany was a daughter of Francis and Elizabeth Wills. She was baptised at Lostwithiel in 1705 and married Andrew Briant at Lanlivery in 1730.

The registers of Lostwithiel for the seventeenth century are incomplete but the bishop’s transcripts record the baptism in 1678 of James, the “sonne of Peter Robins by Loer His wife”. The children of James’s brother John Robins included both a Peter and a Lore. The latter name sometimes appears in the records as Laura or Leah.

John and James Robins are described as a joiner and a carpenter.[3] Peter Robins seems to have been engaged in similar work as in 1671/72 he received payment for “tymber worke about the Tower, Ladders and Clockhouse”.[4]

The exact connection of William Clark, the kinsman of Elizabeth (Robins) (Morfield) Wills, is uncertain. Prior to residing in Tywardreath, he lived in the parish of Lanteglos by Fowey.[5] A John Clarke and Joan Robyns were married in 1654 at Liskeard[6] where many other Robins individuals were recorded, including a William Robines, carpenter, in 1660.[7]
