BURNE OF LANIVET
The parentage of Thomasine Burne or Bourne who married William Menheire in 1622/23 at Lanivet is confirmed by the records of a chancery case of the 1650s between John Menheire and Henry Bourne. The plaintiff, John Menheire of Covent Garden, stated that Henry Bourne of Lanivet held or claimed to hold property “for his owne life and the lives of Thomas Bourne and Mary Bourne his Father and mother”. The answer of Henry Bourne refers to “Willm Menheir the Complain[an]ts Father, who maried with this defend[an]ts sister”.[1]
A Thomas Bourne and Mary Pellow were married on 16 February 1594/95 at Lezant and had a son Henry or Harry baptised there on 12 March 1597/98. It is not clear whether these were the Thomas and Mary who later lived at Lanivet as there is a plausible father for the Lanivet Mary in Henry Pethick of Lanivet whose will was written in 1606. The will names, among others, Harry Burne, Francis Burne, Thomasine Burne, Jane Burne and William Burne, and makes Thomas Burne the residuary legatee and executor. Unfortunately, no relationships to the testator are stated for these individuals.[2]

Francis seems to have been a son of Thomas and Mary Burne as William Menheire
was one of the men who took the inventory of Francis’s estate. In addition, the
1687 will of Henry Burne names his “Cossin Richard Bourne” and Richard, son of
Francis and Jane Burne, was baptised at Lanivet in the 1630s: Lanivet bishop’s

[8] The Lanivet parish registers include two burials of “Thomosyn Menheire wid[ow]” , one on 25 Jan 1686/87 and the other on 11 May 1688. It is unclear which was the wife of William. The other seems to have been the widow of Thomas Menheire. One of these Thomasines was the residuary legatee and executor of the 1677 will of Richow Hobb of Lanivet (Kresen Kernow, AP/H/1896).
